TRUMP PLEDGES TO DRAIN THE SWAMP AND IMPOSE CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS
The Donald ^ | Oct 18, 2016 | The Donald

There is another major announcement I am going to make today as part of our pledge to drain the swamp in Washington. If I am elected President, I will push for a Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress.

Decades of failure in Washington, and decades of special interest dealing, must come to an end. We have to break the cycle of corruption, and we have to give new voices a chance to go into government service. The time for Congressional term limits has arrived.

If we let the Clinton Cartel run this government, history will record that 2017 was the year America lost its independence.

We will not let that happen.

It is time to drain the swamp in Washington, D.C.

That is why I am proposing a package of ethics reforms to make our government honest once again.

First: I am going to institute a 5-year ban on all executive branch officials lobbying the government after they leave government service.

Second: I am going to ask Congress to institute its own 5-year ban on lobbying by former members of Congress and their staffs.

Third: I am going to expand the definition of lobbyist so we close all the loopholes that former government officials use by labeling themselves consultants and advisors when we all know they are lobbyists.

Fourth: I am going to issue a lifetime ban against senior executive branch officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government.

Fifth: I am going to ask Congress to pass a campaign finance reform that prevents registered foreign lobbyists from raising money in American elections.

The entrenched political machinery of the American oligarchy will never let it happen.

Obama said that it is absurd to think elections could be rigged because they’re so ‘decentralized’. So evidently he’s been giving the subject a lot of thought.

Exactly what we need.

Getting it through Congress will take extraordinary skill. If anyone can do it, that would be Trump.

Congress does not need term limits - it needs REAL Ethics. IOW - get the money OUT of Congress.

As long as they can get rich buy selling themselves to lobbyists, and are promised nice jobs afterwards - nothing will change. It will actually get WORSE!

Most of these will probably never occur, but the lifetime ban on executives lobbying on behalf of foreign governments ought to be passed. Both parties are seriously guilty of this and there ought to be actual real jail-time for anyone who violates this kind of rule.

Gonna have to lock it up tight....Two terms "in a lifetime"...so we don't play musical chairs.

Congress was never intended to be a lifetime job.

Ummm Donald...

You didn't propose getting rid of their Pensions and Vesting only in their 401k if they serve > 5 years.

That IMHO is a mandatory no brainer...

The Donald has to get into the ring first, and that means the White House.

He’s not there yet, even if millions want it so.

He could sort of do it in the Republican party by having the party not recognize a candidate after 3 terms in the house. That would put the democrats on the spot. The issue would be getting sitting members to not just change parties

Two term limits on HOR and senators

I favor term limits, but two terms is too short for the House. Two terms for Senators is twelve years. That converts to a six term limit in the House, which strikes me as reasonable.

If you look at the House, the workhorses are the subcommittee chairmen, who have typically been around for at least three or four terms. They've been through the cycle a couple of times and have had time to build real expertise.

We will lose a lot of good, productive members in the prime or their careers even with a twelve year limit. The main point is to end the perception that service in Congress is a lifetime sinecure and a terminal job. Members should know that they will return to private life at a time certain, and generally before they retire. But they should have enough time to learn their jobs before we kick them out.

For all who have been screaming Term Limits, this is what we have wanted.
Get up and vote! Don’t stay home, make a difference.
Donald Trump is an underdog now, don’t let this opportunity pass.

I agree....Newt will be the guiding light on the matter. What we have now is a professional government....not a government of “We, the people”..

Bad idea , term limits...our founding fathers knew what the Byzantine empire was...term limits will truly create a permenant class of bureaucracy with zero accountability to anyone. REPEAL THE 17TH AMENDMENT FIRST!
