Mysterious Hero Cold-Cocks Mugger With Thermos At Bus Stop, Prosecutors Say

COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A mysterious good Samaritan came to the aid of a woman getting mugged at an Andersonville bus stop, cold-cocking the attacker with a Thermos and leaving him on the ground for police to clean up, authorities said.

But authorities don't know who swung the Thermos: The good Samaritan took off before officers arrived, leaving a bus stop full of witnesses to tell the tale.

According to his public defender, Lomeli has worked as a valet parker for the last 20 years.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Tuesday said Lomeli could be released on his own recognizance as long as he qualifies for the Cook County Sheriff's Office's electronic-monitoring program. If not, Lomeli will be responsible for $100,000 bail

It started Monday afternoon, with the woman waiting for a bus in the 5200 block of North Clark Street, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

The woman spotted a man — later identified as Rolalio Lomeli, 61 — holding a knife, prosecutors said.

She moved away from him, but he followed her and grabbed her from behind. As the woman struggled to get away, the Thermos-wielding good Samaritan stepped in and knocked Lomeli in the head, prosecutors said. He fell to the ground and was still lying there when police arrived, court records show.

Several witnesses who stuck around told police what happened, but the good Samaritan was gone, according to a police report.

Police recovered a broken knife with a hook on one end, prosecutors said.

Lomeli, of the 2600 block of North Shore Avenue, now faces charges of armed robbery with a deadly weapon.

Can't be. People have constantly told me that the only thing that counts as a weapon is a gun and if you do not have a gun and witness someone being assaulted you are helpless.

Not totally sarcasm.

I am very much in favor of guns just pointing out they are not the only weapon you have.

Hurray for the guy who swings a mean thermos.

Yes, like the ape with the suitcase commercials or Timex takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Thermos can take it.

To: Alas Babylon!

As I’ve said before, it’s the same way the deep water knows to stay out of the shallow end of the pool.

“I’ll give you my Thermos when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!”

Temperature gradient. Again. Outdoors in winter, your core temperature is higher than your extremities. Hot soup, OTOH, is much hotter than your core temperature will ever be.

It's simple thermodynamics. A system will seek thermal equilibrium. The nature of the system governs the time taken to achieve it. Analysis of any further examples is left as an exercise to the reader.

Gee, thanks. I never would have known that. Perhaps the poster who posed the question regarding blowing on hands and soup would also be interested.

The man who fled a traffic stop on Wednesday night – during which Rock Hill Police officers say they found a Thermos filled with cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy – turned himself in to authorities on night Thursday, according to police records.

Freddie Antwan Thompson, 25, of Green Street Extension, surrendered to authorities on charges of driving under the influence and resisting arrest, said Mark Bollinger, Rock Hill Police spokesman. Authorities also placed a hold on Thompson in the jail for the York County Multijurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit.

Officers pulled Thompson over on Eden Terrace about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after they saw his car weaving and traveling below the 35 mph speed limit, according to a police report. While speaking with him, officers claim Thompson appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. When asked how much alcohol he had consumed, Thompson said one beer, the report states.
