Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Prize for Literature "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition," the Swedish Academy said on Thursday in awarding the 8 million Swedish crown ($927,740) prize.

Literature was the last of this year's Nobel prizes to be awarded. The prize is named after dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel and has been awarded since 1901 for achievements in science, literature and peace in accordance with his will.

Someone’s got it in for me
They’re planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they’d cut it out quick
But when they will I can only guess
They say I shot a man named Gray
And took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks
And when she died it came to me
I can’t help it if I’m lucky

My 27 year old nephew...a very bright and "cerebral" kid...thinks that Dylan's works are worthless. We once had a long discussion about Tambourine Man in which he said that he couldn't even begin to see its meaning or "purpose".So now we have a running joke that someday I'll make him understand what a "jingle jangle morning" is.

Dylan did some amazing stuff (particularly in his early years) but....Nobel Prize? Nope, does not compute.

But then,he deserves one more than the Community Organizer-In-Chief does.

Back when I was an English major, before the Derrida fad, before the queering, I said that, if you did not know Bob Dylan was a singer, if you did not know he was famous, if you did not know he was a culture icon – in fact, even better, if you had never heard of him – and you put Desolation Row into Norton’s Anthology and assigned it to a senior seminar, it would surpass all of the XX Century except Yeats, all of XIX except, possibly, Coleridge, and would stand with the top five poets of all time.

Nice to know the Committee agrees.

BS on so many levels. Just shows how stupid the Nobel thing has become.

Not only is it not “lit”, not good, but also ...40 years late? Not at all timely. Absurd.

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
To Desolation Row

For pop-song lyrics?

Not at all.

Then again, the Nobel prize is a crap anyway. Barry got the Nobel Peace prize just for being Barry.

Dylan is just another 60’s radical leftist who hid his leftism as best he could to sell more records.
“Now I’m a liberal up to a degree
I want everyone to be free
but if you think I’ll let Barry Goldwater
move in and marry my daughter
you must think I’m crazy
I wouldn’t do it for all the farms in Cuba”

“Talkin’ John Birch Paranoia Blues”
Hey, “Bobby” everything those paranoid John Birchers predicted about communism have come to pass...thanks in large part to you.

“We got this guy Obama, and he’s going to change things.”

Yes, he wrote some good songs.

But a “literature” prize?

Please. He’s just another pop star that was marketed by Madison Avenue and used to push leftism.

I always like his song “Girl From The North Country” and he did it best with the late Johnny Cash. Also he did a song about Israel called “The Neighborhood Bully”.

Well, your nephew is partially right.

I grew up on Zimmerman (Dylan is a marketing ploy from Madison Ave.) and thought he was a genius and all that.

After I studied English and got a degree in it (a real degree, not an honorary degree) and have been studying American literature and poetry fervently for these past 30 years, I realize that Zimmerman really just copied the voice of all the Imagists, aided with a bit of weed.

Yes, very pretty, poetic sounds. Strong images.

But throughout the 20th century there were poets who wrote just as beautifully who actually said something.

Zimmerman compared to Yeats, to Dylan Thomas, even to Robert Frost? No comparison.

Poetry has to convey a meaning, other wise it is nothing more than the “jingle jangle” clang of cymbals.

I see some folks don’t think he deserved the “Prize”. In my opinion, he deserved it a hell of a lot more than Obama deserved his!

Agreed. Most lyricists can pack more into a few words than the Toni Morrisons of the world. But if leftists on the the Nobel committee listen to the lyrics of Neighborhood Bully, they might try to yank the award.

“Bright and cerebral?” And without a soul evidently.

Anyone who would describe Dylan’s music as “worthless” is someone I wouldn’t waste one second of my time talking to.

Just curious...what left wing causes does Dylan promote?

Which left wing politicians did he ever endorse? He has never campaigned for any politician.

Just because he was critical of certain people/organizations (and the 2 you cited definitely deserve criticism) doesn't make him a raving leftist.

Is it time for: Your Favorite Dylan Album?

"Nashville Skyline" - until "Blood on the Tracks" came out - then I fell in love with "Desire" the following year.
So, yeah, "Desire" it is.
