I now live in a small town in South Georgia with a beautiful bike trail. Of course, I have to bike a sidewalk for a few miles before I reach the trail (I ride a mountain bike...so I can ride the sidewalks as long as I yield to the rare walker).

I was nearly run over by a car a few weeks ago who was coming out of a doctor's office parking lot.

He didn't see me...he probably wasn't even looking.

I no longer ride during the week.

And when I ride on the weekends, I am unusually careful even in parking lots and on sidewalks.

The greatest danger is the driver who is on the phone or texting.

Situational awareness is imperative.

I now have a foot down rule. Where there might be danger, I stop and put a foot down. When I see there is no danger, I start again.

I used to ride on sidewalks until one day I nailed a pedestrian coming out of a residence. Thankfully no one was hurt, but I no longer ride on sidewalks. Pedestrians on sidewalks are completely oblivious to bikes. Besides that, I think it’s illegal
