'Manxiety' is a rising problem and blokes are failing to talk about their emotions
The Mirror ^ | 10 Oct 2016 | Vicki Grimshaw

Whether it’s down to a fear of looking weak or an inability to express emotions, when it comes to mental health , men bottle up their feelings far more than women.

And, sadly, this can make things even worse for them. Stephen Buckley, from mental health charity Mind, says: “Women may talk more openly about their feelings and turn to friends and family for support, whereas men may find other ways to unwind, like watching TV or using drugs or alcohol.

The idea that ‘real men don’t cry’ can stop men accessing help.”

Mind’s findings show that almost a third of men would feel embarrassed seeking help.

25% of all women are on some sort of medication

That means 75% of them are walking around untreated

Leonard Hofstadter: Got any advice?

Beverly Hofstadter: Yes. Buck up.

Leonard Hofstadter: Excuse me - you're a world-renowned expert in parenting and child development, and all you've got is "buck up"?

Beverly Hofstadter: Sorry. Buck up, Sissy Pants.

Many years ago, in a photography class, I saw one of the women rolling her eyes when a couple of the guys were talking about their obsession over telephoto lenses. I immediately chimed in about my preference for wide angle lenses — I thought she was going to choke holding back her laugh. :=)

Yep, you’re right. As a woman, I can say that women are attracted to strong men, and emotions spilling out all the time is not going to be attractive.

I take my emotions and wrap them up in a ball, swallowing them down deep inside where they slowly eat my soul. Like God intended.

Every few years, you see one (or a series) of these “channel your inner pantywaist” articles. As though men need to be blubbering poodles to be complete human beings.

I’m waiting for the article that tells women that to be whole, they have to be more like men.

Real men DON’T cry. Maybe once every few decades - Mom dies or a child dies. Other than that, men DO set their feelings aside and get on with life. America was a better country when that was known.

It’s all about balance. Holding everything in will just give you a stroke, letting everything overwhelm you will just turn you into a basket case.

There have been a few times I’ve told the wife ‘I need some help here, prayer and working out just ain’t cutting it” and we talked. I’ve gotten the occasional anxiety/panic attack. There are meds that help, but those same meds can turn me into an uncreative zombie. Being a gym fanatic and avoiding eating garbage works 99.995 percent of the time. Sometimes, though, talking about stuff helps the brain sort it out; things that seem unimportant- or overwhelming - seem different after hearing myself put them into words to another human.

Oh, dear!

I feel all unsafe and squiggly inside at the thought that I might be bottling up my feelings. What if that makes my period come irregularly?

Now I know that it’s not enough to express myself with a man-purse and rebellious earrings. I have to open up and tell the world about my insecurities and how I long for someone like Hillary to make those decisions about the minutia of my life that I am just too wobbly inside to make on my own.

There! I feel so much better getting all that off my tiny little chest.

Where’s the whiny little girly boy who cried about brittany spears?

What the hell, that was a girl right? I'm not joking, are you sure that was a guy?

I’d like to hear from someone who’s lost a son from suicide.

Guess they were never told “buck up, pansy”.

Yeah, which is like somehow a strength thing.

I believe instead of being taught to get in touch with your emotions, how about we figure out how to simply not have them?

All people don’t act the same when their close ones die, and not all “men” need to show their emotions for therapy.
