ON THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, N.C. (AP) — Talk about braving the storm.
A North Carolina man and his fiancee rode out Hurricane Matthew on top of an old Coast Guard light station more than 30 miles off the Atlantic coast.
Richard Neal is the owner of Frying Pan Tower , a platform that is about 100 or so feet above the ocean, only reachable by helicopter or boat. While the 360-degree views of sunsets and sunrises are amazing, there’s no land in sight.

Well, it’s survived since 1964. Been through a few hurricanes, I’d guess. Flying debris and flooding no issue there. Flat hard roof, steel walls, hurricane rated windows and doors. Interesting spot.

It’s been degrading since 1964. That spiral ladder alone will kill your maintenance budget. Notice the rust streaks in photo post 13.

Most gulf platforms have catwalks around the base about 10 feet off the water. The fishing there is fantastic.
I’ve fished that tower, I guess it was late 1990’s a buddy brought his boat up from Savanna Ga, we took about 200 lbs of various fish, including Spanish Mackerel, Red snapper, vermilion snapper,flounder etc. It was the most exciting fishing trip I ever made.
With any kind of a sea ,the shoals are a killer, you hear them before you see them
