Fiorello La Guardia was elected Mayor of New York City in 1933 as a Republican, and re-elected in 1937 and 1941. He did to New York what Giuliani did, but it was a bigger hill to climb because he had to destroy the Tammany Hall political machine first. Someday I’ll post an essay about what La Guardia did, how he did it, and how he was assisted by Thomas Dewey, Robert Moses and even FDR behind the scenes.

Former mayor of NY. Airport named after him. He was tough on crime but somewhat of a progressive.
He was outgoing to put it mildly.
