We have the same parents; we were told the same thing. Still a point of contention between the wife and me; it disgusts me when the kids waste food. She thinks if I pressure them they’ll be fat...

BTW, the population of Ireland was greater in 1840 than it is today. The population is still recovering.

The only up-side to that whole shameful, criminal history of British oppression is that the diaspora drove the Irish to Canada, the U.S. and Oz. I love our U.S. Irish people.

Me too. I grew up with a father that didn't want leftovers so whatever wasn't eaten at dinner would get dumped in the trash. I still have a huge aversion to throwing anything away from watching perfectly good food get wasted.
I would not be surprised.

That German immigration was a big issue during the Revolutionary War - and the primary reason why we don’t have a national language. So many German colonists helped Washington, and he knew they’d be alienated with English as the national language.
I don’t like forcing kids to eat, but I want them to get in the habit of only taking what they’ll eat. My wife complains if I finish their dinners; I simply won’t throw it away. It isn’t them getting fat - it’s me!
