The NFL is blaming its horrible ratings on the election

The NFL is blaming its horrible TV ratings on the election, according to a leaked memo to team owners obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

Every single one of the NFL's primetime offerings (Sunday, Monday, and Thursday Night Football) is down double-digits, according to Sports Illustrated. Overall, NFL viewership is down 11% this year.

The NFL wrote that the drop in primetime was likely because of "unprecedented interest in the Presidential election." The letter went on to reference the 2000 election as another period of time when NFL ratings went down.

The NFL is not the only one to make the connection. In an interview with Sports Business Daily, Mike Mulvihill, a senior VP at Fox Sports, said the current season reminded him of fall of 2000, a year which included the race between Al Gore and George W. Bush. 2000 was the only year during the decade 2000-2010 where the NFL saw a downtick overall, Sports Illustrated notes.

Celebrating gay players, condemning Christians and hate for America - who would watch this?

Did anyone else notice how few peeps were in the stands on Thursday's forty-whatevers game-like-activity?

This football-interested-person (definitely no longer a "fan") watched part of it, and it looked as well-attended as a preseason game.

Not only are we former fans offended by the NFL's lack of taking a pro-American stand, we don't like being lied to about why we are watching fewer (in many cases none) games, and why we are going out of our way to avoid NFL sponsors and merchandise.

One could also say that for us former NFL fans, anti-Americanism and ingratitude matter.

Good for them. When the election comes and goes it will be interesting to see what they blame next. One thing is for certain, it won’t be them where the blame really lays.

I’m house, the NFL is not allowed on. I really enjoy football. Played pop warner, HS and college.

Originally from Jersey Shore, huge NY Football Giants fan since I converted from Cowboys fan when 9(cousins taunted me up on Christmas because I had Danny White jersey, I realized my son, lol)

I stopped playing fantasy football, no longer subscribe to the Sunday ticket.

I will not support the NFL until they get rid of the pink and pinks.

What’s next, celebrate transgender OL? A queer Zebra? Dog killer?

The commercials are tiresome. The broadcasters suck, especially Buck and Troy.

Until I relocated to this wonderful State of Georgia, I was never a college football fan, though I played collegically.

I watch student/semi pro college football now for on.

Kids play each snap like its the last snap of their lives.

I miss the NFL.

Stupidity, arrogance, or both?

I don't know, or care — back in 2012 with that strike, I was rooting for the strike to make the season impossible.
(If it had, Fast & Furious probably would have been the big news-story and gotten the media investigation it needed.)

Horrible officiating, stupid rule changes, incessant commercials, disrespecting our flag, ought to be enough, but add on the horrible Announcers and Commentators, political commentaries, stupid busy screens showing no score changes, those insane Thursday night pajamas, unequal punishments for infractions, endless delays, and arbitrary enforcement of their own new rules makes for a bad product.

The NFL has lost its mind.

I believe Rush came out about the same time as that article and made a similar prediction.

I am not watching and will not for the S-Bowl. High School Hockey for $5 a game? Best ticket going. I’ll spend my money with them rather than the advertisers for all the NFL Teams...

and the incessant commercials.

I’ve noted that, years ago, the average NFL game was played in about 3 hours. Now games are routinely 3 1/2 hours long. Anecdotal evidence is that there are far more commercial breaks than previously.

We go to a commercial break after every touchdown or field goal. Then, we come back for the kickoff. Then, right after the kickoff, another bloc of commercials are shown. Why do we go to a commercial right after the kickoff? Whose bright idea was that???

I’m guessing the owners know exactly why the ratings are down.
They are just lying about it for whatever reason.

I might watch a college football game but if an ACC team or teams are playing, I won’t watch.

Hey NFL, I spent the morning with four other pro football fans. I made a comment that because of all of the Black Lives Matter hooey and disrespect of the American Flag by Kapernick and his unpatriotic thugs I have lost interest in the NFL this year. All four agreed and noted that they, too, aren’t watching games as they have in the past.

What a slutty bunch of cheerleaders to compliment a leather balled thugfest. If that’s what the NFL has become, I’m never going to another game.
