As one of the most successful women to ever play the male-dominated game of chess, Nazi Paikidze is used to having her moves watched closely.
Her latest has drawn international attention: Paikidze announced last week that she will boycott Februarys Women's World Chess Championship in Iran because the players will have to wear hijabs.
Paikidzes decision will deprive the tournament of one of the games brightest stars and biggest draws the U.S. champion who once told a magazine she would do everything I can to help more girls get into chess.
It’s an ethnic name, not Persian. Georgian?
A hijab is just a scarf over the hair. It was common traveling wear even in Europe 60 years ago. Just watch Julie Andrews in Hitchcock's movie "Torn Curtain" sitting amidst all the other German women.
If I were in her shoes, I would draw the line at wearing a chador, which covers the entire body, or a burkha, which covers the face as well.
My teenage daughter is traveling to Africa next summer on a mission trip, and the dress code is that she must wear a long skirt at all times while outdoors. It is hardly oppressive, it is just the local custom. I could envision a few left-wing SJWs in New York flipping out over a long skirt, but really?
Every society has customs about dress and comportment, and just because they don't let a woman display her hair (or long legs or cleavage or tattoos or bare arms or butt crack) does not mean the custom is oppressive.
As they say in the Marines, "It's not a hill to die on."
It’s a Persian nickname.
Good for her. I admire her. Who cares what the media and naysayers say? I don’t.
I'm thinking the Georgians had the name first. Maybe the Nutzis should change their spelling.
[As they say in the Marines, “It’s not a hill to die on.”]
You make think it’s not a hill to die on, but for MUSLIMS it means you have submitted and are a dhimmi.
The Ferengi of Star Trek keep their women naked and consider any clothing to be a perversion.
I’ve managed to expose my rook and you’ve developed you queen within the first move????
Bravo for you and shame on me!
Why Iran of all places?
She’s Georgian-American and the name is a Geirguan name. It may be Persian too.
The Georgians have their own alphabet and could have spelled it a
Differently using the Roman alphabet. Parents should have known better. Maybe Nazee.
Roger. Georgia and Iran are virtually adjacent, so there is probably some relation culturally, linguistically, and demographically. Not surprised, therefore that the names and nicknames are similar or the same.
No no no....just felt a Queen move is more in line with the story that’s all. :)
Lol! Got it now.
Nazi is also a Hebrew name. Don’t get a linguist started, or you can’t make her stop.
Great news...
Might consider Anglicizing it to Nancy.
