Russia has warned the United States not to intervene militarily in Syria against forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, threatening that it may shoot down any aircraft attempting to launch strikes.
In a bluntly worded statement, a spokesman for Russia’s defense ministry warned that Russia and the Syrian government had deployed sufficient air defenses to block any potential attacks.

IIRC, we have already established effective countermeasures against the S300 due to intelligence coups and hands-on of the system.

I’d say the more proximate cause is the airstrike on the Syrian Army base where the USAF handed ISIS its biggest victory since its initial expansion was stopped.
It is beyond credulity to suggest that, 7 minutes apart, the US airstrike and ISIS ground attack were not coordinated. Further proof of the relationship was given when a State Dept. spokesman actually threatened Russia with terrorist attacks.
The Russians are dealing with the reality that the US is there for the sole purpose of destroying the Assad government, and that ISIS is the US’ proxy to that end.
To explain: we are in Syria to undermine the Syrian government and state, to exterminate local Christians and other non-Islamists, to destroy the international order, and to commit crimes against Humanity in support of our Al Qaeda and ISIS historic allies.
And let no Russian object to this worthy mission!
We’re in Syria because the Saudis purchased our foreign policy.
