Hurricane Matthew Live Thread II
NOAA/NHC ^ | October 6 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/06/2016 4:10:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

Well the Haiti Government itself dips their hands in the till too...so it’s a no win for Haiti....also the people there are so accustomed to “agencies” doing it all for them they seldom have the initiative themselves.

I recall the International Relief people saying after their earth quake that many of the locals did not pitch in as is seen in other countries when disaster hits and why their recovery takes so long.

You need to cite verifiable source(s) for your assertions. Otherwise, start your own thread to discuss unsubstantiated theories.

I doubt very seriously Matthew would drop below 900 mb. Katrina’s lowest was 902mb out in the Gulf and Camille made landfall at 906 mb.

That’s not to say this is not a very dangerous storm. And those refusing to evacuate would do well to remember the phone calls to 911and radio and news stations in South Mississippi where people were in their attics begging for someone to come get them. They played those calls on national news. One of them was a girl I went to nursing school with who lived in Ocean Springs and refused to evacuate. Her and her husband were SURE they were far enough inland. The sheriff’s dept even marked their door and told them they were doing it so they would know where to start looking for bodies after the storm, I think partially because they were trying to scare them into evacuating and because they also knew it was a serious possibility they would drown.

Her, her husband and children managed to survive by floating out of their attic to someone else’s. They left Mississippi all together after that.

If your told to evacuate, do it.

The high winds and rain bands of a hurricane last for days.

Sorry; that's just not correct. It's very unusual for serious rain from a tropical system to extend over more than 24 hours. And rain bands cover a much wider area than the wind field. A typical tropical cyclone moves at 5 mph or faster, with strongest winds in the eyewall. Twelve hours or so is almost always the window in which damaging winds arrive, do their worst, and are gone. Blustery winds up to 40 mph in outlier rain bands are an occasional nuisance before and after this window, but are no danger to anyone in a secure building. Rising water is a different consideration, but I am addressing your comment.

A tornado with 80mph wind (F1) is pretty much just a nuisance.

Damage that makes news outside of a local area kicks in at the high end of F2 strength, 150mph winds.

Yep - been noting that ever since the Euro dropped the mic on that one yesterday about this time. If it holds together, that could get weird in the Gulf since the water is nice and toasty.

Yep! We do get a lot of “the sky is falling” from the media and nothing happens. We that live here and have been through quite a few, know when to take the warnings seriously. The government(s) and media have no one to blame but themselves for us being skeptical of their reports. That’s why now they have to say “this isn’t hype, it’s real”! Shame on them!

Just in case no one has posted that particular graphic just yet. It’s an updated wind speed/expected map.

GFS is a track model, not an intensity model.

People are always surprised at a hurricane meandering or even looping back on itself, but it’s happened several times before. It’s just that most prior instances were before the advent of having all these forecast storm track models in widespread availability via the internet.

My mother’s home is right there too in Stuart (two blocks from the St. Lucie River). As of this time, it looks like Catergory 4 hurricane weather will directly impact the area. Fortunately, my mother and her stubborn husband *finally* agreed to evacuate yesterday. Today, they are gobsmacked glad they did.

“Wikipedia “

There’s your problem. You’re dumb enough to use that notoriously incorrect website as a basis of your information. You might as well watch cartoons.
