A half-million Brazilians want to break away and form a new country

RIO DE JANEIRO — Hundreds of thousands of people in the south of Brazil have voted in an unofficial plebiscite to separate from South America’s biggest nation and form their own country, organizers of the ballot said.

Counting of the 617,000 votes cast on Oct. 1 in the “Plebisul” finished on Tuesday. Organizers said 96 percent had voted to create a new country out of Brazil’s three most southern states, arguing they pay too much in taxes to the central government and get too little in return.

Considering there are more than 200 million Brazilians, that’s not a lot.

The south of Brazil has three states with a heavy majority of Brazilians of European background. As such, it is more like Argentina or Chile. Overall, Brazil now has a majority of people of African heritage with heavy concentrations of this ethnicity in the North of the country. The understated reason behind the “secession” movement in southern Brazil is race which is a much bigger factor in the country’s politics and social situation than most Brazilians will admit.

If they did break away, it would be a nice country. Good climate, plenty of natural resources, a western-oriented, relatively homogenous culture and hardworking population. i would live there.

They’d better seal their borders tightly though, because they would be swamped by poor Northern Brazilians trying to get in.

I want the United States out of the United Nations and I want the United Nations to move to Geneva or Brussels or somewhere like that.

I’m sure Northern Italy would love to break away as well.

The Lega Nord has been trying to create an autonomous state in northern Italy for decades.

I was there. Northern Italians despise southerners as lazy & indigent. Italy’s automotive, aviation, & small arms industries are all located up north.

They run between the space of the heel and toe, and shout,"SNAP!"

Then when you lift the shoe, they yell "sucker" and run under the baseboard.

At least the ones in Texas did.

One branch of our family moved from Germany to there instead of the Midwest. The southern part of Brazil has a lot of the Japanese-Brazilians, too. It’s a farming area, much like the Midwest US. Not much sugar cane, mostly corn, soybeans and vegetables, so no big centers of slave descendants. A pretty nice area that I would feel comfortable in.

They always bring up slavery, because otherwise people might have to face some uncomfortable truths.

Interesting. A branch of my family were Volga Germans who went to Brazil instead of the US. Then, a couple guys from the Brazil branch came north to the US as well. Eventually the two groups stopped corresponding because they no longer had a common language.

Also, we had a foreign homestay student from that part of Brazil. Lovely person. I could well see her family of small business owners voting for secession. They love Brazil, but it is very dangerous.
