Police fatally shoot machete-wielding man at University of Colorado's Champions Center

Police shot and killed a machete-wielding suspect inside the Champions Center at the University of Colorado's Folsom Field this morning after they say the man refused to drop his weapon, campus officials said.

Emergency responders were alerted around 9:15 a.m. today that a man with a machete had entered the Champions Center, which houses CU's sports medicine department.

Police said the incident began with some kind of altercation in the parking area outside, during which "one of the people involved did brandish a sharp weapon and was menacing with it," CU police spokesman Scott Pribble said during a morning news conference. "At some point, he went inside."

Officers from the CU and Boulder police departments responded to the Champions Center, and confronted the suspect.

"We just know that he was directed to put the weapon down and refused, and it was at that time, for public safety, that we believe the shots were fired," Pribble said.

Around 9:28 a.m., a call of "shots fired" was aired over the police scanner, and officers reported the suspect was down in a stairwell inside the center.

Stadium Drive remains closed in the area of Folsom Field as police continue to search the building.

The county's Critical Incident Team has been dispatched to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

Ed O'Malley pulled up to the Stadium Drive closure after he received a text from his wife saying she was in the building and had locked herself in a room.

"She said there was someone running around with a machete," he said. "Then I didn't hear from her for about 10 minutes. I got pretty nervous."

O'Malley said his wife, who was there for a physical therapy appointment, thankfully was fine

"Luckily it sounds like she's safe," he said.

Lindsey Ritz works in the sports medicine department in the building and usually is on the second floor of the Champions Center, but said she was working late today. She was on her way in when she heard.

"It's definitely surreal," she said.

Ritz said she got a hold of her coworkers and they told her they were fine, but operations would likely shut down for the day.

"I'm just really glad they're OK," she said. "Now we're just waiting."

At the morning press conference, campus spokesman Ryan Huff read a statement from Athletic Director Rick George: "Regarding the incident this morning in our Champions Center, first and foremost, all our student athletes and staff are safe. We have safety protocols in place. When everyone received the campus alert, all responded accordingly and the protocols were effective. I want to recognize the Boulder and CU police departments for their prompt and swift response to this incident and neutralizing the suspect. Their quick actions allowed for the situation to end without further incident"

This is the third officer-involved shooting in Boulder County this year.

The most recent officer-involved shooting in Boulder County occurred Sept. 10 along U.S. 287. Boulder County sheriff's Deputy Teri Javes, a 19-year veteran of the department, shot Adrian Joseph Shaffer after police received reports of a man with a weapon tucked into his waistband who appeared to be trying to fight with passing traffic.

Shaffer died from his injuries a week later at a Denver-area hospital. Javes remains on paid administrative leave while the countywide Critical Incident Team investigates the officer-involved shooting.

In May, Boulder police shot and killed Bryson Fischer after receiving reports of a man standing in Boulder Creek and firing a gun into the water. Police fired 62 shots and hit Fischer 11 times. The Boulder County district attorney cleared the two officers involved in that shooting, which was described as suicide by cop.

He was probably looking for the snack bar, got upset when the islamaphobic students would not help him, then picked up a random machete that just happened to be lying close by.

He wasn’t intending to hurt anybody, but just wanted to get their attention by waving it around.

Students’ and cops’ fault.

Maybe in some places. If someone shows up with a machete around me? They picked the wromg weapon of choice, and they die, end of discussion.

The source said it appears he was a "religious zealot of some kind."

Very little doubt that he did...

Actually, Mexicans have used machetes in their rampages too. Could be a Mexican perp, as well as could be a Muzzie perp. Remains to be seen. Lots of South Americans in Colorado.

“He has yet to be identified and it’s unclear if he was a Colorado student. Another news conference with further detail is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET.”

Well....we’re waiting. Must be a POC POS or islamo.

Play stupid games...One’s religion does not matter, their actions do. He failed.

Just enough information to imply it’s a white Christian, but actually not enough to show he’s not a muslim.

“A source close to the investigation told the Daily Camera that the suspect was a white male who appeared to be a “religious zealot of some kind” and who had been overheard talking about “looking for sinners” and referencing the commandments.”
