Does anyone remember Herters?
https://prezi.com/sw59mojxuigy/the-history-of-herters/
I used to love reading their catalog. still have one around somewhere.
Can you tell us why other than price?
I don’t buy much from Bass Pro because of prices - and we have a local shop that is super and known all over the east coast - Green Top Sporting Goods - whose prices and service are 5 star and with a world-class staff. I doubt if Bass Pro dented their business at all when they came to town years ago......
A new Cabela’s opened 10 min. from my home this year - and a friend even works there - but I have not been impressed....at all.....
Thanks......
Not all clothes, they actually have "Sporting Goods". Prices are better than Cabela's / Bass Pro. Quality is better than Gander Mountain.
I hit their 70% off "Inventory Reduction" (pre-inventory) sale a couple of months ago and did pretty well. That was dumb luck, though, as I returned a couple of days later and the store had been picked clean.
100% agree !!!
Cabela’s is expensive, but BPS is WAY overpriced!!!!
This is a bummer!
I guess its location, location, location.
I go in the KC Cabelas (or even drive by it), and it looks packed. I can’t imagine that Cabelas is hurting in sales. I can only assume that there are some Cabelas out there that are just as empty as the Olathe Bass Pro?
Gander Mountian only sold off thier mail order division to Cabella’s. They are a private company otherwise.
Nice houses for a yuge discount to be had soon. Would be a great place to retire but the Winters suck.
Yeah, fresh air, low taxes, neighbors who look out for each other, affordable housing and generally conservative government...just horrible.
In Herter’s catalog, I liked the Winemaking equipment, on the opposite page from the “Water Distillation” equipment .... along with the warning “Distillation of Wine is extremely illegal” (wink wink).
[ My son works at Cabelas, they have been working him like a dog, hes covering three departments and totally stressed out. He told me tons of trucks arrive each day and theyre moving a ton of product yet are running on a skeleton crew. This must be the reason, to maximize profits for the buyout. However, the employees are really, really stressed out at his store. Cabelas are very cool if youve never been to one. ]
Does he work in the Sidney location? I have some distant relatives that work there and was at a family reunion this summer, they were all gloomy, they think the only thing that is gonna be left in Sidney (the former corporate HQ) will be the flagship store / tourist attraction by I-80 and the rest of it will be closed down.
On the plus side... If anyone is living near Denver CO and Cheyenne Wyoming and looking for a nice sleepy town to retire in, Sidney Nebraska is about to have a LOT of cheap real estate available!
I agree :(
Same thing happened when West Marine bought out BoatUS. What a fine organization BoatUs was. West Marine believes in this diversity hiring. They would hire people with no boating knowledge at all whereas BoatUS prided itself on their employees. West Marine based in Cailornia is California personified. High prices, flashy.
lol..true that for me also. That said I have an East German field coat that is 25 years old, wears like iron and is very warm. I paid $20 for it.
You’re correct.
Cabelas sucks anyway, plus their products are overpriced and can generally be purchased for less elsewhere.
They built a store ten miles from my house but it never seemed to be busy. I’m thinking it won’t be there in a year.
My last trip there...checking out at the cash register, I needed to accept or decline some sort of conservation support question on the charge card reader. I was paying cash...cash was on the counter. I refused to indicate one way or another....said I just wanted to pay for the product and leave. Cashier said I had to check one of the boxes. I told her she could check one of the boxes, but I wouldn’t. Cashier said she wasn’t allowed to. I asked for the manager. Manager said I had to check one of the boxes to complete the sale. I said I wasn’t checking a box, buying the product or ever coming back. I picked up my cash and left.
Did I mention that was my last trip to Cabelas?

My relatives that live and work in Sidney ( for cabelas) disagree, all the city or shitty council got all spend happy with the “Cabela’s Money” from all the people working there and according to them have gotten all Drunken Sailor spend happy, wasting money on new schools and idiotic road projects that now (especially with all the jobs that are gonna be lost) they are not gonna need. The success of Cabelas attracted a bunch of liberally spending libs to the shitty council and now they are going to squeeze blood out of the stones that are left....
My cousin was complaining about how they tore down a perfectly good high school and spent a bunch of money to build a NEW SHINY because they wanted the town to “appear modern”, now the residents who stay are stuck with the bill... Also they made these idiotic road improvements to the main part of town to “look cosmopolitan” something called a bulb-out I think on the sidewalks that cost a whole bunch of money... not to mention a new hospital to replace the one that was built in the 1980’s that was just fine the way it was....
Now the little town is screwed, but hey, maybe they can become Nebraska’s Boulder, HA HA

Funny you mention that, my 3rd cousin was working a corporate job for cabelas ( for over 25 years) and was laid off this summer because he was “white” , I hear they hired a bunch of Hindus to do the work he used to do.
I occasionally take my kids to the new Bass Pro at the Pyramid in downtown Memphis so they can see the alligators and get fudge. When I want sporting goods, I go to Sportsman’s Warehouse or order online.
The catalogs were a hoot, and the rest of the operation was "interesting" as well. A friend of mine still looks back fondly at going to the short-lived Herter's store that was in the Rocksylvania neighborhood of Iowa Falls (IA); I think the building may still be standing.
I liked Cabela's better back when they offered less... particularly less Chinese-made crap. Bass Pro Shops = "meh."
