The police have not duty to protect any ONE individual but a duty to protect society as a whole. That is why they have a duty to stop this guy BEFORE he hurts any other citizen.

I’ve seen the video of the UK cops with the shields and those officers are flipping idiots to even accept such use of force policies. The only reason they do is because not enough of them have not been killed or injured.

Now on the other hand, 60k cops in the US are assaulted each year, 10k required hospitalization. Police work is hands down the most dangerous job FOR WORKPLACE VIOLENCE.

Yes, that is my point. Apparently the technique works, or they wouldn't be doing it.

Also if you check your source more carefully you will find bartenders had a higher rate of workplace violence and even though police come in 2nd for workplace violence, they still don't even make into the top 15 occupations for workplace fatalities.

It is also true that police have higher rates of criminality than the general population. It's the job of the self-governed to police their police. It's the only way to avoid tyranny.

It used to be that they would not escalate situations from the very start, or even before they got out of the car (they escalated it in this case by trying to run him over as they pulled up on the scene before they even fully knew what was going on). In cases such as this where they knew in advance there were mental health issues, they would bring in the appropriate person(s) to deal with it.

Having watched the video from the car, I am reminded of my childhood when an older cousin would take a beat-up surplus jeep around our family's ranch, and try to run over animals (coyotes, javelinas, rabbits) and would get out and shoot them if he couldn't. There was some motivation - my grandpa would pay him for every coyote and javelina he brought in, but it was still hunting.

Based on the language these cops used, they were hunting this man down, and when they couldn't tag him with their vehicle, they got out and shot him up. It was no different than my cousin trying to run down a coyote and then putting a few rounds in it. Those cops wanted to kill that man. And they did.
