NJ gas tax hike announced alongside a sales tax decrease

Gov. Chris Christie announced a deal on Friday to increase New Jersey’s gas tax by 23 cents.

The Republican governor and Democratic leaders of the state legislature reached an agreement that satisfied Christie’s wishes to include a cut in sales tax with the eight-year-deal. In January 2017, sales tax will be cut from 7 percent to 6.875 percent. A year later, sales tax would be further reduced to 6.625 percent, NBC4 reported. Estate tax would be phased out over the next 18 months and tax credits for veterans and the working poor would be introduced.

The deal will raise $2 billion annually for the state — $16 billion over the eight years — to pay for road work, but still needs approval in both houses, 6ABC reported. The federal government will match the $16 billion, NBC4 reported, creating $32 billion to fund road work in New Jersey.

Oooh more “free” federal money! The NJ suckered are going to get hosed in the end. I bet they end up paying way more taxes after all the smoke and mirrors, not to mention the federal tax hit.

Three cheers for Senate leader, Sweeney. This will stop the mass exodus of seniors.

You are a moron. The federal government will match the $16 billion

Keep your twisted mind in the NE. You bring that thinking south it may get rough. I don't need the government for a penny more than they already receive. It's no wonder government workers love their jobs.

Republican governors in this region are just STUPID! First Corbett caves to the unions and raises our gas tax by 30 cents. What did it get him? NOTHING! He lost, people were pissed and it was just another example of feckless, spineless GOP “leaders” caving to the media while the media laughs and kicks them out of office! All anyone will remember Corbett and Christie and the REPUBLICAN PART is that they are paying a hell of a lot more for gas. No one will remember the temporary sales tax reduction. NO one!. Complete freaking fools!

New Jersey's transportation trust fund is flat broke. The governor shut down most road projects when the state fiscal year ended on June 30th because every penny in fuel taxes the state currently collects is used to pay servicing on prior bonds.

Christie might come out looking pretty good at the end of the day here. I don't think most New Jersey motorists would argue that the fuel tax was best left as-is. The fuel tax hasn't changed since 1993, and inflation has reduced the purchasing power of a dollar by more than 65% since then.

Wow an eighth of a percent cut! How magnanimous!!

But I expect that my morning dollar cup of coffee at McDonalds will still be $1.07. (F*****G LIAR !)
