Poor taste: A Delhi burger chain offers discount to mark India's strikes along LoC

On Thursday, as the Indian Army's Director General of Military Operations Ranbir Singh revealed that the Army had carried out surgical strikes on "terror launchpads" along the Line of Control, social media exchanges began to heat up in both India and Pakistan.

Within minutes of Singh's press conference, cashing in on the virtual jingoism, a food joint in National Capital Region, Burger Singh, sent out a mass text message that read: "In light of the surgical strike by Indian defence forces on terrorist camps (POK). We offer 20% discount on all orders..."

Scroll.in spoke to Prashant, a call operator at Burger Singh's branch in Connaught Place, who confirmed that the discount could only be availed of online. Prashant also said that Burger Singh's phone had been ringing off the hook since the text message was sent out.

Under "special offers" on Burger Singh's website there was no mention of surgical strikes, but there was a mention of the coupon code sent out with the text message, guaranteeing 20% discount.

Several Indian social media users found Burger Singh's marketing strategy unappetising.

When Scroll.in contacted Burger Singh for comment, its management replied: "We would... like to establish that we support the government's decisive and prompt action to preserve the honour of our armed forces and the dignity of our country."

"We are AGAINST terrorism and love our nation," said Kabir Singh, who is described as the founder of Burger Singh on the company's website. "It was never our intention to hurt, harm or otherwise prejudice anyone or their beliefs. As a response to all the love and hate coming our way across social platforms, we announce an increase in discount to 30%. politically correct Coupon Code – strike30."

If possible, don’t eat or drink ANYTHING there. It is amazing what the lower GI is capable of doing to rid itself of India’s common bugs. Just maintain the electrolytes, stay hydrated and close to a toilet!

To some extent that is true for a lot of countries. Some years ago I was considering a trip to Italy and took a Conversational Italian class at my local CC. The fellow who taught the class was born in Italy and came here in his late teens just after WWII. Amazing fellow – worked his way through college, became an engineer working for the DOD for over 30 years until he retired, he also sung opera and was an amazing landscape painter.

Anyway he gave a lot of practical travel tips since most of the people taking his class were planning on traveling to Italy. And he was up on things there as he traveled back once a year.

I recall one of the many of the pieces of advice he gave was while in Italy - always drink bottled water; never order a drink, even an alcoholic drink with ice cubes in it; be careful eating any fresh fruit unless it is something that had a thick skin that could be peeled like a banana or an orange and even something like an apple shouldn’t be eaten if it was washed off with the local tap water; and never eat any raw vegetables. (And yes, he even said to avoid eating salads.)

I recall him saying that it wasn’t that the water was “bad” per se or that Italians as a whole are unhygienic, but said “it is never a good idea to consume the tap water in any foreign country, or as he said, “the little bugs” there are not the same as the “little bugs” here. The “the little Italian bugs” don’t make the Italians sick because their guts are used to them, but you? You will be in the bathroom for 24 hours wishing for death.”

A couple of years ago my nephew and his wife vacationed in Italy and my nephew got a 24-hour case of “food poisoning” while they were in Venice.

I’ve lived in India, and I’ve seen the butcher shops.

I maintain my post and firmly believe anyone who eats meat in India is out of his mind.

For anyone who wishes to continue living, it’s a bit extreme not to eat anything. But, yes, there are bugs everywhere.

You get used to the milder ones after a while.

From my 45 year study of Puranas and other associated Vedic texts, cow flesh was always totally prohibited. Doesn’t mean people never ate it, but it was utterly condemned. Cow is considered mother - gives milk, bull father - pulls plow and helps produce grains. Never to be killed. There were some animal sacrifices in which animals were killed, it was a mystic performance and not common for large animals to be sacrificed, for kings pretty much only. Basically the only flesh acceptable was game. Worshipers of Kali ate and do eat offerings to Kali, but it is usually done very irregularly. And even then, a mantra has to be recited into the goat’s ear (only can be goats) which roughly says “As I kill and eat you, in my next lifetime, so you will kill and eat me”. Once a month can be done, at a certain moon phase.

The number of Hindus who do not understand or follow the traditional texts is of course large, but thankfully there is a Hindu renaissance for some decades going on. Modi is really helping this, re-instituted reading Mahabharat and Ramayan in schools.

According to a 2003 study referred to by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization 42% of Indian households are vegetarian.

43% of religious Hindus are vegetarian; 28% of non-religious Hindus are vegetarian
