Navy scuttles sailors' enlisted rating titles in huge career shake-up
By: Mark D. Faram and Sam Fellman, September 29, 2016
he Navy deep-sixed all of its 91 enlisted ratings titles Thursday, marking the beginning of an overhaul of the rigid career structure that has existed since the Continental Navy in a radical shift sure to reverberate through the fleet and the veterans community beyond.
Sailors will no longer be identified by their job title, say, Fire Controlman 1st Class Joe Sailor, effective immediately. Instead, that would be Petty Officer 1st Class Joe Sailor.
Officials say the controversial move will improve sailors' lives and ease their transition into the civilian workforce by broadening their skills in this tectonic shift in Navys personnel system to redraw the traditional lines between enlisted job specialties a massive shake-up that is only beginning. Within the next three to four years, earlier if possible, the service plans to allow sailors to retrain in related skills, expanding their worth to the Navy while reaping broader assignment opportunities as well as increased advancement changes and greater access to special pays and bonuses that come with the most critical skills.

Officers by the thousands should and COULD speak with one, loud voice ... GFY, OBAMA !
yep
So we are going to drive subs without sonargirls (it’s an inside joke, folks) and machinist mates? Or is it that we will not have designations like STSSC(SS) or MMMC(SS).
End of a distinctive tradition for the navy. They other branches have been going by rank forever. They managed to survive.
When I was in the Navy, being from the south, I always said “Yes sir” to the officers...
Once a Chief Warrant Officer told me to always say “Aye, Aye sir”...
Well, as I said, being from the south, I replied back “I, I sir”...He said no, it’s “Aye, Aye”...
So I tried again...”I, I sir”....
He just looked me, shrugged his shoulders and said, “Yes sir will do fine...”
I am a retired Machinery Technician Senior Chief not a generic E-8. This decision was made by wimps that I’d run out of the engine room in 3 days max.
Translation: people with little skill assigned to lowly positions were hurting their feel feels.
I’d like it if folks would drag their feet for about 90 days.
This is utter horsesh!t and i’m livid...
When I served in the US Army we had
Private E1,
Private E2,
PFC E3,
Corporal or Spec. 4, E4
Sargent or Spec. 5, E5
Staff Sargent, or Spec. 6, E6
SFC or Spec. 7, E7
Master Sargent or Spec. 8, E8
Sargent Major or Spec. 9, E9
But they did away with Spec. 5 thru 9, now.

I’m sure the real purpose of this is to get ‘man’ out of all the job descriptions.
Gunner's Mate becomes Gunner's Mate Non-Gender Specific
In the Navy I sailed in we would have referred to you as a Machinist Mate. Back in the day I was a BT.
I think somewhere the services have the “Petty Officer” rank. Should institute the “Petty Bitch” rank. They’re going to need it.
I think that I shall be ... Able Body Seasick!
Hopefully we will get Trump in office and he will appoint people who will reverse 8 years of liberal political correctness.
I reckon everyone will wear the same color jersey on the flight deck now.
If the soldier is in dress uniform you can identify their branch, so you have some idea of what they're doing.
They will be wearing branch brass, such as Infantry, Armor, Signal, Medical, or as in my case, MI.
The top two in the disk are for enlisted, the bottom two are Officers.
You forgot 1st Sgt E8. (never a good idea to dis TOP)
Nope. They will wear the color of whichever sexual identity they "self identify" with that particular day, or hour.
