Dear God, are they kidding? If the author finds this "hard to see" he isn't looking. Every military and police veteran in the audience is at least a little angry. This demographic is composed principally, but not exclusively, of adult males with enough disposable income and leisure time to be fans. Let us look at the NFL's target demographic. Voila! Viewership is down!
This isn't difficult, although quite a lot of money is spent on market research that states the obvious. We neither need nor desire political instruction emanating from privileged millionaires, whether they be players, coaches, or commentators. If that's what we get, we turn it off. If they shut up and stick to football, we don't.
The only way ostensibly intelligent people such as the author can maintain this obtuseness is to be in jaw-tightening, anus-clenching denial of the obvious. That's a personal problem we just can't help him with.

NASCAR decided that they had moved on to bigger and better things, and began insulting their core fan base. The resulting loss of attendance and viewership doesn’t seem to have had much effect, other than network cameras framing their shots to avoid showing empty sections in the stands.
I was going to say it's because the games are set up by liberal elites... but the term is wrong. It's more like the games are set up by the monied class - and their style dosen't appeal to Mexicans OR middle class Americans (for different reasons). Seems the monied class doesn't give a damn about football...sportsmenship, our country or the safety of fans driving into crimeridden 'communities'.... They care about cash bled from the game. It shows.
The moneid class could save money by recruiting directly from prisons and playing the games in prison yards... beamed directly to gamblers in Las Vegas etc... why keep up any pretense?

American football is a niche sport as far as the rest of the world is concerned.
