DEVELOPING: At least one person was killed and dozens more were hurt after a crowded train slammed into a busy station in Hoboken, N.J., during the Thursday morning commute, investigators and local media reported.

The woman who died appeared to be standing on a nearby platform before the crash, a law enforcement source told Fox News, adding that the engineer was pulled from the train "semi-conscious" and rushed to a nearby hospital. People pulled concrete off bleeding victims and passengers kicked out the windows amid crying and screaming.

At least 65 riders were injured, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, citing recent reports. Paramedics rushed at least 11 people to the emergency room at Jersey City Medical Center, with three of the patients in serious condition, hospital officials said. They added that none of the injuries was life-threatening and described 40 other patients who arrived by bus as "walking wounded," saying medical staffers were evaluating them in a cafeteria.

I was afraid of that.

There may have been bodies that weren’t immediately visible.

Is anybody making a connection with the 5 pipe bombs they found on the tracks between Elizabeth and Hoboken just 10 days ago?

The engineer’s name is a piece of information that would open or (mostly) shut down a whole area of speculation.

If it’s O’Brian, that would be good to know.

If it’s Mohammad, that would be critical to know.

OK, I guess perspective is everything. I thought you had to get further up the Hudson River before the word “upstate” applied. I guess that makes Poughkeepsie nearly on another planet...

When I lived in Forth Worth we considered Dallas as back east.

Not far off the mark, IMO. As regards TX, I think FW is where the West begins. It certainly does by geography and probably by attitude, too.

As a Houstonian I consider the D/FW Metroplex as “South Oklahoma, but with more dooshes per square mile”.

Interesting that a similar accident happened at this station in 2011:

The foreign press is still showing the deceased woman on the platform:

The US media has pixelated it out.

Train was not equipped with PTC.

Nonsensical media blather statement that applies to over 90% of US railroad traffic underway today. No other reported Silver Streak-type accidents today in spite of that fact.

As you said, “Upstate” is an entirely relative term. I’ve talked to Greenwich Village residents who think Midtown is “upstate”. I live in the mid hudson valley, and I don’t consider it “upstate”. Like so much in life, terminology in relative.

Anyone crazy enough to live in Houston should try to hide the fact. But then, they are crazy, so there’s that. ;)

Based on reports I’ve read, there was possibly a bomb that lifted the a portion of the train off the track rendering it unable to stop.
