SEOUL, South Korea - A North Korean soldier crossed the border that separates the country from one of its major rivals, South Korea, to defect, the South Korean Army announced on Thursday.
The military authorities are now investigating the North Korean soldier who defected by crossing the central-eastern zone of the military demarcation line located inside the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) wide Demilitarized Zone that separates the two countries, the South Korea Defense High Command said.

South Korea ping
... and another family goes into a NK prison.
Unless the deserter had no family. But I’d be
surprised if NK let military with no family that
close to the border.
Just curious, is there any record of a South Korean soldier defecting to the North?
I know James Joseph Dresnok did this, only in reverse, but most North Koreans who defect go the long way around, China, Mongolia, Laos...
Amazing he got across, I thought there were landmines, etc.
Belenko was divorced and didn’t have much of a family. Like Rinos in our party.
The Sidebar Moderator excerpted the article, perhaps because it was written by AP. However, the original text is in Spanish, so here is the rest of the translation in English:
The Army provided no further details.
The two Koreas share the world’s most fortified border since the end of the Korean War (1950-1953). The peninsula remains technically in a state of war since the conflict ended with an armistice and not a peace treaty.
Despite the strong military presence on the border, North Korean soldiers are able to reach the South once in a while. Another soldier from Pyongyang crossed the barbed-wire fence to South Korean territory without being discovered by guards, which generated criticisms over the way the soldiers from Seoul protect the border.
Over 29,000 North Koreans have deserted to the South since the end of the war, according to the country’s government. Most of them reached South Korea through China.
Noting in the article about exactly how many people have crossed the DMZ. According to article, more than 29,000 people from the DPRK have defected since since 1953, mostly by way of China. That's about 460 a year.
BTW, my Chrome threw up an error message asking me to call a TFN and locked up my browser. Anybody else have this problem? (Running virus check and CC Cleaner now...)
Several have been kidnapped.
Me quedaría lejos de El Vocero.
I think El Vocero itself is okay. It just so happened that AP wrote the article.
And I had no warnings when accessing the article.
I had to roll back an update from Win10 recently and I’ve been having intermittent problems with Chrome since. Mostly around plugins. Personally I think Win10 needs to go. Just installed Mint on a test machine but am not impressed - video is skippy and there are audio sync issues. If I can’t sort it in a week or so I’ll move on to a different distro. Meantime, Win10 stays. :-[
My browser did the same thing with the error message and phone number. I can reload over it, but it’s still there. Anybody know how to get rid of it?
If he's divorced, that's one way to get even with her!
His name is Wok Sof Lee.
I went into taskmgr and ended the browser. A thorough anti-virus check found nothing ewrong. Have not gone back to the site.
Thanks.
