Supporters Rally Behind Haverhill Man Under Fire For Trump Lawn Signs
CBS Boston ^ | 9/24/2016 | Paul Burton

HAVERHILL (CBS) — On Saturday morning in Haverhill, horns were blaring and engines were revving as residents rallied behind homeowner Rick Early, who has put up more Donald Trump signs than the city allows. Early, along with many of his friends, are standing their ground.

“It’s just a show of support. A lot of people want to support what we are doing and don’t like what the city is doing,” Early said.

The city has an ordinance prohibiting political signs that total more than 32 square feet of space. Early’s signs add up to more than 300 square feet.

“It’s way in excess of what’s allowed, and that’s all he’s been cited for is that he’s over the signage allowed by the city ordinance,” City Building Inspector Dick Osborne said.

Police say Mr. Early has a right to assemble in front of his home, though many neighbors were not happy about the rally. Many of the supporters that showed up said they were not there for Trump, but to support Early’s First Amendment Rights.

“I’m upset by the disturbance in the neighborhood. They’ve been honking like this since 8 a.m.,” one neighbor said.

“I am not decided yet, but he’s been getting pushed around for exceeding the square foot limit. I don’t see where this isn’t anything but his free speech,” neighbor Paul Fitzmeyer said.

Early put up the signs in January. Saturday, he experienced both support and disdain for his display. He said no matter the reaction, he will stand his ground for his candidate.

It’s a stupid law, and it is on its face a violation of the First Amendment. The law should be overturned, and the ACLU, if they believed in their own mission statement, would back the homeowner.

So who is putting up more Hillary signs “than the law allows.”

Heck who is putting up ANY Hillary signs?

There are more conservatives up here in MA than one would think, but the political system is completely gerrymandered and jury-rigged as to be non-navigable and inpenetrable for conservatives except for trojan horses like Scott Brown or William Weld, and we saw how they turned out.

I might drive by and honk my horn in support...:)

“It’s a stupid law, and it is on its face a violation of the First Amendment. “

Nonsense.

It keeps the neighborhood from being trashed up with signs, many that others may find objectionable.

Banning ANY signs would infringe on free speech..

Whatever. I think it's a great thing that this is happening in Massachusetts! The local Dems there must be flabbergasted that so many Trump supporters came out of the woodwork like that.

Tip of the iceberg...

I posted yesterday that I have seen ONE bumper sticker and zero signs in my area of MA.

The bumper sticker was for TRUMP.

I have not seen ANY Hillary signs. Plenty for Trump. I used to see a few Bernie bumper stickers.

“I have not seen ANY Hillary signs.”

Amazing,isn’t it?

There was a thread on DU the other day saying people are AFRAID to put out Hillary signs because of the viciousness and violence of Trump supporters.

I guess they all missed the riots of the past few years—and they sure as heck weren’t Trump supporters.

Don’t you think that the Massachusetts Republicans are in collusion with the Dems? The GOP seem to want someone in the Governors office from time to time and a smattering of Republicans in the Senate and Representatives but they really want to keep the Dems in the majority. They are more afraid of conservatives than Democrats. The Dems are as corrupt as the GOP and they can always make deals behind closed doors.

Heck, why wouldn’t I think that? The problem is, you simply cannot get elected in this state if you aren’t (or propose policies that mirror the liberals)

My dad was involved in state and local politics back in the seventies and early eighties, and had to change his party affiliation and run as a Democrat.

My dad was no liberal. He was a plankowner of Citizens for Limited Taxation, and was a conservative in every single respect. But he knew it was impossible to get elected as a Republican.

So he changed party affiliation to get into office, and once there, participated as a conservative voice, which didn’t endear him to a lot of people. He got a lot of nasty phone calls and editorial abuse when people used to write letters to the editor in local papers. (who does that now?)

But his voice was one that apparently there was an audience for, since he did serve for a good number of years locally.

I am listening to Jeff Kuhner right now. Howie Carr is on in ten minutes.

I should listen, never heard Jeff Kuhner, but I love Howie Carr...he’s been walking the walk up here standing up to liberals for a long time.

Sigh. I just can’t listen anymore, though. Makes me too angry.
