VR developers threaten Oculus boycott unless Palmer Luckey resigns
FastCompany ^ | 23 Sept, 2016

Things just keep getting worse for Oculus.

A day after revelations that founder Palmer Luckey has allegedly been funding a pro-Trump/anti-Hillary "sh**posting" meme factory, a number of of virtual reality developers are expressing anger at, or saying they will boycott, the Facebook-owned Oculus unless Luckey resigns.

"Insomniac Games condemns all forms of hate speech," Motherboard quoted the console games maker as saying. "While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion, the behavior and sentiments reported do not reflect the values of our company. We are also confident that this behavior and sentiment does not reflect the values of the many Oculus employees we work with on a daily basis."

Others, too, have stood up to denounce Luckey's actions. Among them: NewtonVR, Polytron, Tower Underworld Online, and others, Motherboard noted. No doubt many developers will continue to support Oculus, however. Still, while Luckey is of course within his rights to support any cause he desires, it's worth questioning how much damage his positions will do to the company's fortunes given the furor they've caused in the last 24 hours.

Oculus representatives did not immediately respond to a Fast Company request for comment.

I knew I liked Oculus for some reason. They may have sold out to Zuckerdork, but they were first on the scene. I love my DK2 and hope it continues to work despite advancements.

This guy has not learned from the Trump model.

“Yes. I did it. I am glad I did it! If you hacks want to quit, QUIT! I’ll find 20 developers better than your lazy ass! And head the f*** back to India while you are at it!”

That says it all folks. Under progressives, you will be required to have undying loyalty to all its dogma, or not have a job. They will eagerly discriminate against conservatives including education, housing and eventually food.

I am not a gamer developer, much less a VR one.

I always say, if you want to work like a slave, work at a gaming company. LONG hours, LOW pay. Everyone *thinks* they want to work for a gaming group. I know better.

“While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion, the behavior and sentiments reported do not reflect the values of our company.”

[... and therefore the behavior and sentiments are hereby censored and those expressing them expelled.]

Can they possibly reconcile their two statements for those of us who are not proficient in Lib logic?

Fastcompany has to be the dumbest magazine ever published...it’s layout is done by 20 somethings with no kids, who dwell in the city regentrfied areas and all have skinny jeans and hipster shoes and the men weigh 125 lbs and have high voices. I am a techie but hate this mag. Vomit on a page and print words of different fonts all around it...they don’t feature any company which manufacturers anything, just those who push and filter data, like apps that sell movie reviews and crap. Ugh.

Facebook bought them out. They were really the first on scene with a functional VR platform. Sony’s Vive has overtaken them in sales and platform adoption, and Sony’s pricepoint is lower than Oculus. Zuckerschmuck is a greedy ass.

His mistake was signing on to the sketchy milo promoted pac... turns out he only donated 10 Grand. Unfortunately not just the left was angry about this, reddit Donald posters were immediately outraged. Now I get it... no wonder the nimble america pac had to solicit outside donations, they weren’t exactly raking in the big bucks from the billionaires lol who were rightfully skeptical of where the money would end up.

“While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion, the behavior and sentiments reported do not reflect the values of our company.”

So yes that is logically irreconcilable. But in their world where progressive ideology is their religion, these zealots will eagerly deprive you of your right to a particular job, while simultaneously proclaiming their tolerance and love of diversity and your right to express your beliefs.

My lead 3D developer just resigned to take a position as senior developer at a gaming company. He has been building an application to playback sorties (and do pre-flight briefs) for my project. We have the initial aircraft and terrain models up with multiple camera views. It's not a game. It's real aircraft on line. Perhaps too much pressure.

Personally, I wouldn’t know where to begin for 3D development. What language?

Mostly C++ bindings to OpenGL. Have C# bindings as well since we are building in C#/WPF in preference to the current planner built on C++/MFC. Original code was UNIX/X11/Motif when we did the debrief that you may have see in the Top Gun movie. Updating that product for Windows and modern nVidia GPU cards. Some higher level libraries labeled "OpenGVS" are being employed to deal with OpenFlight models and Terrapage terrain data. Debriefs may have cockpit/gun camera video/audio available for playback synchronized to the running timeline.
