NEW YORK (AP) -- Since he entered the presidential race, it's been Donald Trump's style to break with convention. It's no different when it comes to debate prep.
The New York billionaire has skipped practicing a full debate as he gets ready for his first on-stage meeting with Hillary Clinton. While he has studied policy ideas and practiced answering questions he may face Monday night, experts who have been through the process call his decision to skip time-intensive mock debates a mistake.
"I think he's putting himself at an incredible disadvantage," said Brett O'Donnell, a Republican strategist and veteran debate coach who compared Trump's decision to a football team failing to scrimmage.
Trump's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, has run through full-length mock debates against a stand-in for Trump during her preparation sessions. For good reason, O'Donnell said. Gaming out every potential permutation of what might happen in the 90-minute showdown helps a candidate calculate how to respond.

So Hillary, the fact that you and your foundation received over $150 million from Saudi and Gulf Arab states has absolutely nothing to do with your opposing giving Americans who were harmed by the 9/11 terrorists the right to sue the Saudis?
The moaners, groaners, complainers and naysayers on this thread seem to think Trump is 4 years old and can't operate on his feet on his own. This man is the CEO of a successful real estate development firm and has fended off all sorts of enemies and "friends" to get where he is now.
I understand our need to comment on these FR threads to voice our opinions, but to think that Donald Trump needs our advice about the debate, is a little far-fetched.
Trump will do fine being Trump.
Successful people don't have enough time to do the kind of exhaustive preparation that a lot of folks seem to think is essential for success.
This is why many "A" students end up working for "C" students.
Soros has changed his game plan. He’s left the Trump protesters ad is now funding the BLM rioters.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Trump is pimpiping the governmement media with a dose of disinformation.
I’d be a little concerned, if it weren’t for something Trump has said:
“I believe you can prep too much for those things...It can be dangerous. You can sound scripted or phony — like you’re trying to be someone you’re not.”
That seems like pure Trump to me; but I’m sure he’s also practicing a lot more than it appears.

Trump won’t bomb in the debate. If he stumbles all he has to do is call Hillary, fat, dumb and stupid to her face and that she looks like a aged cow and 1/2 the nation will cheer!

Trump must be Trump, far better for him to be spontaneous and unpredictable than a scripted performer.

Even if he wins the debate they will say he lost it and Clinton won it.

Not a mistake if you have the mental capacity to change and adapt on the fly.
Hillary is not capable of this so has to be prepared for what they anticipate will be some likely scenarios. Which actually leaves her ill-prepared for the unexpected.
He is prepared. That he doesn’t do a dress rehearsal for something fairly unscripted does not mean he isn’t ready. Silly media.

I expect Hillary to come out swinging much the way Ford did. She needs to if she is going to survive. I'm not sure what the correct approach would be for Trump, considering that she is a woman.
