Trump's unconventional debate prep skips mock debates

NEW YORK (AP) -- Since he entered the presidential race, it's been Donald Trump's style to break with convention. It's no different when it comes to debate prep.

The New York billionaire has skipped practicing a full debate as he gets ready for his first on-stage meeting with Hillary Clinton. While he has studied policy ideas and practiced answering questions he may face Monday night, experts who have been through the process call his decision to skip time-intensive mock debates a mistake.

"I think he's putting himself at an incredible disadvantage," said Brett O'Donnell, a Republican strategist and veteran debate coach who compared Trump's decision to a football team failing to scrimmage.

Trump's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, has run through full-length mock debates against a stand-in for Trump during her preparation sessions. For good reason, O'Donnell said. Gaming out every potential permutation of what might happen in the 90-minute showdown helps a candidate calculate how to respond.

I agree with you 1000%. But those debates assumed him to be a joke in the beginning. Mr Trump was nothing more than a ratings draw. All barrels will be trained on him now.

This man is the CEO of a successful real estate development firm and has fended off all sorts of enemies and "friends" to get where he is now.

Yeah...and has an interest in 700 or so businesses...350 in the USA...the rest overseas.

Here is a short clip (no pun intended) of how Trump operates:

Why would trump bring in a debate partner that will sell his tactics to the other side... trump plays chess while others play checkers and throw lawn darts up in the air to see who can throw the highest.

I hear you. Hopefully, his new campaign staff has gotten through to him about popping off.

The MSM would like nothing better than one ugly moment on which to fixate.

Clintons downfall is that she and her team think this is going to be a repeat of her NY Senate Run when she debated Lazio in 2000.

That was 16 years ago. She is not the same person. She had never run for office before. She now is known has a State Dept shrill harpy who LIES on the regular.

Hillary’s team is hoping for a repeat of 16 years ago when Lazio supposedly attacked her too strongly.

This isn’t 2000 and this isn’t a New York primary. What they also are planning for is the Moderator to step in and challenge Trump on Hillary’s behalf.

Probably the biggest card Hillary’s team is trying to play behind the scenes is the coordination of the moderators and stacked audience of going after Trump.

Hillary and the Moderators are going to get exposed for cheating in the debates this time.

It is often difficult to distinguish preparation from duplication and practice from the race. In 1984, Carlos Lopes won the 1984 Olympic marathon without having ever raced the distance.

Jackie Gleason was well known for not rehearsing much to the chagrin of his fellow actors. Nevertheless the Honeymooners will live forever.

"how does the AP know how Trump is prepping? This from almost a month ago:Laura Ingraham Tapped for Trump Debate Prep (playing Hillary Clinton) http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3463749/posts"

I listen to her on line, since she isn't live locally anymore. So.... I think she cut out early or was out entirely on Friday, Hmmm... Where did she go? BTW, she is having Raymond Oroyo ( Spelled correct ? ) fill in for her a lot in the 3rd hour, so other than appearing on Fox a lot, what has her sooo busy? Is she prepping Raymond for an extended gig? ;-)

IMHO? She is Trump's Press Secretary when he wins. Oh my grab the popcorn, she doesn't suffer fools gladly, that will be something to see daily.

Lots of thoughts running through my head. I know Soros does this sort of thing, with paying protesters. But with this, givin the looting we’ve seen, I just assumed it was instigated by those doing the looting. Never thought about Soros’ involvement.

So, Soros is paying people to riot — sending in black people to possibly kill other black people — and risk being killed themselves.

And I’ve not heard one democrat call him a racist.

I pray that what Soros and all America and Israel haters have done comes back on them.

“...over-studied for a test or over-prepared for a job interview only to have it go horribly wrong,”

I was thinking the same thing. If you’re good enough to handle the job, test, etc., then cramming and over studying can be detrimental at times.

“Hillary is not capable of this so has to be prepared for what they anticipate will be some likely scenarios.”

She’ll be prepared. It’s easy if you have the questions in advance.

I hope Melania makes an appearance at the debate. Go ahead and pig-pile on me, but I think she’s been too absent during this campaign. On some level, it’s embarrassing. Using Barron as an excuse is fine, but her parents are there and they could help out. It seems that they did an excellent job raising her, so couldn’t she trust the child with them a couple nights a week?

If she’s shy, she doesn’t have to say anything. Just be there. The post-debate optics of her on the same stage as Hillary and Bill — the comparison — is a campaign “ad” money can’t buy. People instinctively would compare those two women living in the White House for four or eight years.

I love that Mike Pence’s wife is with him for most events.

This reminds me of how I used to prepare for final exams.

While my classmates studied for days and hours and crammed just before the exam my plan...

was to make sure I had several nights in a row with plenty of sleep.

It worked well—why? Because while I may not have known as many pieces of detailed information as well as other students I was able to flawlessly record what I did remember, and I was able to stay calm while taking the exam.

In the case of a debate like this demeanor is very important. Calm and refreshed is far more important than knowing specific facts.

If Trump doesn’t know the answer to a specific factual question he should say “I don’t know the answer, but I promise the American people that I will have an excellent staff that will give me all the information I will need when I need it. Most importantly, I will use that information in support of the interest of the American people which is a strong economy at home and a peaceful world.”

She’ll have her Q&A, and even perhaps Trump’s. But she will not be prepared for his counter-attacks. That she can only guess at.
