What are the odds of a cocked and unlocked 1911 firing when dropped?
I’m not a 1911 guy, I like Glocks.
“What are the odds of a cocked and unlocked 1911 firing when dropped?”
Zero if it has an 80 series firing system.
And it is not a 1911, it is one of the smaller lookalikes in 380.
Colt Mustang .380. It’s 1911 downsized. With the safety on it would be safe.
Near zero. Plus that is a colt mustang not a 1911.
The older 1911 series had an inertia firing pin that is retracted after firing by a spring that surrounds most of the firing pin body. If the pistol is dropped muzzle down from a sufficient height on a solid surface, then the force of the impact might be sufficient to overcome the inertia of the firing pin at rest within the slide (especially a weak and worn one), causing it to go forward with enough force to detonate a cartridge primer, especially a sensitive one. Such an occurrence is quite uncommon though.
Later model non GI 1911’s utilize a firing pin safety that automatically releases the firing pin when the trigger is pulled just before the hammer strikes the firing pin, and serves to prevent such accidental discharges.
I retract my answer.
New answer: I don't know.
