Centuries of struggles and strife, decades of planning and pain, and years of hoping for a place that African American history can call home will culminate as President Obama officially opens the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Obama tweeted from his presidential Twitter account Saturday morning that he was "Proud to help open @NMAAHC with so many heroes. African American history is a central part of our glorious American history."
Before formally opening the museum, Obama will ring the Freedom Bell, acquired in 1886 by the historic First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Va., believed to be among the first Baptist churches organized entirely by African Americans for African Americans. It will be returned to the church for its 240th anniversary later this year.

I suppose it would be impossible but a percentage indication of the backgrounds of the people employed would be interesting. If the architect/s were Caucasian that would be a case in point. It would be somewhat of a paradox if mostly Caucasians built that museum. I wonder about the electrical system......
I have grandkids who attended a high school that cost “just” $198 million and it looks better than that.
.
The building is ugly and does not fit architecturally with its surroundings. It is hideous.
It is the ugliest building I mean REALLY UGLY!!!!
“The native Americans are descendants of immigrants from Siberia and northeastern Asia.”
Modern Central Asians are aware of this. I was deployed to Uzbekistan & a native said to me, “We Turkic peoples get around; we headed west and conquered the Byzantines, then we headed east into North America and defeated Custer!”
Anyway, tell the Mormons that aboriginal Americans are not descended from dark skinned Jewish Indians.
;^)
My experience in the surrounding area suggests that most of the construction workers were probably Hispanic ;-)
One of the architectural firms involved is the oldest minority-owned one in the US, McKissack & McKissack:

I live 40 miles from DC. I will never set foot in that propaganda pavilion.
>>Everyone should be referred to as Americans of xxx decent except native Americans.
If your parents were born here, you should just be referred to as American, even the indigenous people.
>>Does it have a section with the KKK democrats like Robert Byrd, or maybe President Woodrow Wilson the Segregationist? LBJ, Fulbright, Gore Sr.? Just asking.
I’m sure it does, but I doubt that political parties are not mentioned until after 1965.
Since I am not a racist, I have no intent of ever setting foot in that museum. This is despite the fact I've been a Smithsonian member and enjoy museums.
Anything that celebrates diversity brings disunity. Read "It's Your Ship" by navy ship captain Abrashoff. When he scrapped the diversity training and implemented unity training, racial incidents decreased dramatically. This is why Trump's continually mentioning that he will be a unifier gives much greater hope for change than the malicious divider currently occupying the White House.
Well, of course we’re all Americans. But if we’re going to speak of specific ethnic groups with regard to sociology, history, etc., we do have to identify them in some way...
Didn’t bother with the video at the sight. No image there I could see that backs up the claim of “Thousands.” If there were more than 2000 people there, I’d bet they were baited, incentivized, or otherwise mandated to attended this racist, separatist, low-interest event. Reminds me of the “Million” “Man” March.
“Ooo, lookie! That dude that invented stuff with peanuts-n-sh!t.”
Shouldn’t every removed confederate memorial be stored in the new museum?
>>Well, of course were all Americans. But if were going to speak of specific ethnic groups with regard to sociology, history, etc., we do have to identify them in some way...
Well, if we need to break everyone up according to sociology and history, then let’s just use the hypen. It’s easier to say. We could even leave off the redundant “American” part.
Well, my point is just that it’s a museum, and it needs a name.
Every ethnic group in the US - Italian, Irish, Jewish - has a unique history, and I don’t have a problem with museums devoted to these histories; they’re basically ‘books’ in architectural form.
(As others have mentioned, I do have a problem with the funding for these, if it isn’t private.)
When I taught history to jr high kids, I told them that Columbus thought he had reached his goal, the Indies. So naturally the natives were called ‘Indians’. But it wasn’t that Columbus was stupid, he found what he expected to find right were he expected to find it. Columbus was a fan of Marco Polo’s book. Polo had estimated the distance from Venice to China as about 8000 miles. He (mistakenly) thought the world was about 12-13000 miles in diameter, so by his logic, the real Indies should lie roughly 3000 miles west of Spain.
No European (that we know of) had been to China since Polo, so he depended on Polo’s book. The straight black hair and general lack of body hair he found in Indians corresponded to old descriptions of Chinese. The Indians’ language was strange (Columbus hopefully had an Arabic speaker on board because the Arabs did have dealings with the Chinese or their agents) the fruits, vegetables, and animals were all unknown to Europeans. Even the geography conspired to make Columbus believe he was in Asia—islands, lots of them, off of the coast of a mainland. What he didn’t find was the Chinese civilization, but he soon learned from the Indians that there was a civilization on the mainland—which Cortes eventually found and conquered.
