Centuries of struggles and strife, decades of planning and pain, and years of hoping for a place that African American history can call home will culminate as President Obama officially opens the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Obama tweeted from his presidential Twitter account Saturday morning that he was "Proud to help open @NMAAHC with so many heroes. African American history is a central part of our glorious American history."

Before formally opening the museum, Obama will ring the Freedom Bell, acquired in 1886 by the historic First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Va., believed to be among the first Baptist churches organized entirely by African Americans for African Americans. It will be returned to the church for its 240th anniversary later this year.

First the museum should not be referred to as the African American museum. Should be The Museum of History of Americans of African decent.

Everyone should be referred to as Americans of “xxx” decent except native Americans.

I saw part of Obama’s speech. He says the black history is part of the American story, etc. He also said how this museum gives context to what has happened in Ferguson and Charlotte. Interesting that he sounds like an apologist for black rioting in recent years, because of the legacy of slavery. That sounds like what he is getting at.

A shining bronze beacon on the National Mall, only steps away from a monument dedicated to a slaveholder president

Can't get any more racist than that.

As a work of architecture it is a monstrosity. It’s design speaks to no timeless ideal - it is not a participant in the city of Washington, but rather a narcissistic object building - self-referential, in your face, ugly.
If I had to ascribe a style to it, it would be Romulan.
It looks like one of Hillary’s outfits.

If this museum is similiar to the Museum of Natuve Americans it would not be worth visiting.

I’ve always been uncomfortable with the term ‘Native Americans’, because most of us are. I like ‘Aboriginal Americans’ better.

Is there a section on the Slave owning Democrats? Does it have a section with the KKK democrats like Robert Byrd, or maybe President Woodrow Wilson the Segregationist? LBJ, Fulbright, Gore Sr.? Just asking.

black rioting in recent years, because of the legacy of slavery

Africa has slaves. America does not have slaves. I challenge him to name one slave and slave owner today. Just one legitimate one in today's America. Name one in the last 100 years in America. How about 150 years? Any in Charlotte? Any in Ferguson? ... I'm waiting. Come on. Just one black African sold and shackled into the hold of a slave ship and put up for sale on the town square. Still waiting... Nope, didn't think so. Slavery has NOTHING to do with today's riots. Prez NeverWasASlave would have better off speaking to the black on black murders every day in Chicago and other 'hoods.

The first Europeans to encounter the natives of the New World may have been Leif Ericsson’s Norsemen. According to the Icelandic sagas, their name for the natives was “Skraellings.” We could use that but someone is bound to say it is a derogatory term.

I am so cynical of Obama, that I believe everything he does has evil intent. Maybe, deep inside he revels in the violence that is tearing at the heart of America.
Would I be out of line, if I said I have no plans to ever set foot in this so called museum?

I was just looking up the term ‘Indian’, but I can’t figure out it’s real roots...I always thought its root was in common with ‘indigenous’, but that is not the case...

The way liberals look at things, you will be considered racist to declare you won’t go to that museum.

I think I missed something. I know that the term “Indian” or “American Indian” has fallen into disuse. But is it now considered racist or bigoted to call such people Indians??

Aren’t tribal lands still called “Indian reservations” or has that term also been changed????
