Why geeks say Ted Cruz is wrong about ICANN

“Internet freedom is now at risk with the president’s intent to cede control to international interests, including countries like China and Russia, which have a long track record of trying to impose online censorship,” said Stephen Miller, Trump’s national policy director, on Wednesday.

Internet experts call such criticisms off-base.

Under the new ICANN regime, nations will be able to censor content “no more than they are now,” Jim Waldo, a professor and chief technology officer for Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, writes in an email. “These worries are more evidence that the people voicing them don’t understand how the technology works.”

In fact, moving away from US control may be able to preserve free speech by keeping the system free from government control.

“The best defense against foreign governments exerting control over the Internet is to finish the transition on time,” the Center for Democracy & Technology and other advocates of Internet freedom wrote in a joint statement earlier this month. “The transition of these functions away from the US government removes an excuse for authoritarian countries to demand greater oversight and regulation of Internet issues.”

Oooh! Harvard!

Sounds a lot like ‘Obamacare’s critics don’t understand it.’

Well I do understand the technology and the reality is that this is the thin end of the wedge. Anything controlled by others can be withheld, threatened, embargoed, or simply encumbered by more bureaucracy.

Moreover, this is a solution in search of a problem.

My message to the liberals wanting to give it away, “You didn’t build that. It’s the United States taxpayers that built that. It’s not yours to give away. “

There's something to be said for that, when you see that Snowden is now in Russia and Assange is holed up in a Latin American embassy in Great Britain.

The U.S. government is no more trustworthy than the old Soviet Union, as far as I'm concerned.

Sure, and wrong about not wanting another few hundred thousand H1B Visa holders, and wrong about not liking Hillary, . . . tough turkey what "geeks" think.

I spent over 25 years in the IT industry doing everything from writing specialized accounting tools to automating production lines and working on filter software for sonars.

I'll take my own "geek" advice which is that this nation needs to retain control and in fact, make it illegal for any later Congress to permit anyone except the US to be in control.

Or what Mr. Trump can do. I have noticed interest by leaders in other countries in Mr. Trump. Could it be that the election is over and Trump won?

They're not giving away the internet itself. There is no central governance of the internet because the internet doesn't have a headquarters. The internet is just a network connecting servers. It's nowhere and everywhere.

ICANN is just the internet address book. It assigns names/addresses upon request.

Well now they wont have to demand it. They’ll just be able to do it.

Anyone counting on the UN to be fair.

Type in Israel 2 years from now and the first 100 responses will be different images of the devil.

"Jim Waldo, a professor and chief technology officer for Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Science

Harvard has lost it's credibility with many given their history with credentialing Obama and firing Lawrence Summers.

Hence, I take the word of Ted Cruz over Jim Waldo.

Getting internet control away from the U.S. just helps the globalist cause. The (massive number of) control freaks in our government will combine forces with like-minded compadres worldwide, so a true form of heavy-handed globalism can begin.
