No, they aren't. Mob suggests a disorganized, leaderless group. These folks are well organized and well led and, most importantly, well financed.
Because the label “protestor” offers sympathy and news coverage, and I’ve heard the statement “it is just a few being violent, and they have to resort to violence to get their message heard”. Thus claiming to be protestors gives them cover even as they beat people.
It is like the authoritarian left branding itself peace, love and tolerance - and then they can send death threats and try to ruin someone’s personal relationships and job, but it is OK, they are the love and tolerance side, so threats of violence and intolerant hate mobs are OK.
They’ve even tried to break up Sargon of Akkad with his girlfriend by sending her hate mail / online social media after he posted the “Social Justice is a cult” video. Other critics have had their parents sent hateful messages and identities stolen. But it is OK if you have the branding of a moral crusader.
