The military assesses that the shell fired on a joint US-Iraqi base Tuesday was indeed a chemical weapon, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford.
"We assess it to be a sulfur mustard blister agent," Dunford told the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday. It is the first time the military has confirmed its assessment on the record since CNN reported the development Wednesday.

this is about the time to declare, ‘no mercy’ and get it over with
I was assigned to the very small US Diplomatic mission in Baghdad in 1983, during that insane war. During my time there, we saw no reflection of chemical warfare used by Iraq or Iran. Our biggest fear was having an Iranian SCUD land on us.
I believe the Mustard used in WWI was called Nitrogen Mustard, if there's a difference I don't know. Bad bad stuff.
Exactly.

Have War Critics Even Read the Duelfer Report? The Saddam regime was an imminent threat

In the 80s he was the USSR’s friend and had in fact always been such.
“I wouldnt be shocked if we provided them for the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s (when Saddam was our friend before becoming another Cold War orphan).”
Lots of Saddam’s chemical artillery shells are of a US design, because that was a common NATO design, which could be fired from NATO tubes (he had a lot of NATO-compatible artillery).
The actual manufacture of the chemical artillery shells was done mainly in Iraq, Germany and Spain.
The US has been accused of providing targeting intelligence to Iraq during their war with Iran, which was repeatedly used for chemical weapons strikes. I find that pretty easy to believe, as we have great surveillance assets, and the Iranians were such active enemies of the US then (Hostage crisis, Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut, etc.)
However, a few days or weeks (??) prior to the start of the Iraq war, huge transport vehicles were seen leaving Iraq, and going to .. TA DA !! SYRIA.
But .. we never could confirm that ..?? Naturally!
Oh, joy! A red line!

As I understood it, Iraqis were armed with M-16s by the US as well. Our aid to Saddam wasn’t even concealed in the 1980s.
The Iraqi army used AK-47’s Most of their better equipment actually came from France or the USSR.
The US didn’t arm Iraq
I remember this war, and remember that we openly armed Iraq; US troops in the first Gulf War encountered Iraqis with M-16s we had given them. It wasn’t a conspiracy theory, but rather common knowledge.
