Netz, interesting analysis.

I have to ask you a question: Is there an ingredient of wanting to maintain Jewish identity in the face of national identity of nations which are not majority Jewish?

Could that be an aspect of the apparent Jewish propensity for anti-nationalism . . . and even for the attraction to internationalist communism which you described?

Your question: Is there an ingredient of wanting to maintain Jewish identity in the face of national identity of nations which are not majority Jewish?

My view:

Throughout history Jews have “toed the line” in that they maintained their heritage no matter where they lived and under periods of persecution and periods of relative calm.

Jews maintained strict loyalty to G-d and Torah despite the dominant society wherever they lived (as guests of that host nation in my book). Jews honored the powers where they lived. Usually, when the host country turned nationalistic or a new ruler took over, the Jews ate crow. A new Pope, a new king, a benevolent ruler, a despot, a new conquering power, wars, etc. Jews respected the dominant (Christian or Muslim)society and followed the rules while maintaining their devotion to their traditions. So their lives were compatible with their surroundings. Unfortunately, the Jews were never left alone to live their lives as ruler and power after power slaughtered them, over and over again. The issue of “dual loyalties” and blood libels always surfaced and the Jews were decimated by these accusations. Jewish identity is to be maintained at all times, forever (keeping G-d’s promises) while respecting their neighbors. The issue of national identity and spiritually identity should not be a dilemma. Jews live as a majority in one country on Earth - Israel.

If Jews are anti-nationalists it means they are anti extremists. Nationalists usually singled out the Jews as a threat to their country and way of life. The result? Pogroms and murder of the Jewish communities. So, historically, Jews developed a sense of fear and foreboding with Nationalist (Fascist) movements so...they moved to the Left with it's universalist appeal and unfortunately Communism, Socialism, Syndicalism, Internationalism, Collectivism and even Zionism, which is Jewish nationalism as well.
The Left was more appealing because it promised EQUALITY for all. This was the Jews opportunity to break out of the persecution, misery and poverty that they lived in for centuries.

To this very day, Jews are “blinded” by promises of Equality, parity, social liberation and as I stated in my previous post, the Obamian promise of Hope and Change. For some inexplicable reason, these Liberal Jews do not learn the lessons of history when, after all they have been through, they should!
