I hitch hiked all over NZ easily and quickly. Of course, I didn’t sit by the side of the road waiting for a ride.
I walked energetically alongside the road and when the a car came close, stuck my thumb out. viola !

Watson answered the question I was going to ask, which was, how far could this guy have gotten by walking during the four days instead of waiting around for a ride? He probably could have gotten a ride somewhere along the road the first day. I am assuming that if you are trying to hitchhike, you aren’t carrying a lot of luggage that would keep you from walking.
In my hitch hiking days I always walked until I was picked up.
Four days is a long time; he should have looked for a priest.

Punakaiki is only 44km north of the established west coast town of Greymouth.

What was known as the Coast Road runs for 67 miles from Westport in the north down to Greymouth. Punikaiki is about in the middle of the trip. Its a great day trip ...other things to see ...small beaches etc..

In the US and Europe you face the traffic and hold out your right thumb...
in NZ where they traffic is on the other side of the road you walk with your back to the traffic and look over your right shoulder at the cars with your right thumb out making a sweeping motion forward...
