I believe you are correct about that. About a third were loyalists, a third were patriots, and the rest indifferent.
It takes energy, vision, passion and courage to stand for things. Those traits are not found in abundance in a society unfortunately.
Now if we should experience a sudden national threat or some other type of social calamity, people will fear for their own security and might reconsider the destructive path we have been heading down. The prospect of hard times usually awakens people — for awhile anyhow.
