NFL’s TV ratings still falling?

Posted on 09/20/2016 4:43:36 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Is it time for Roger Goodell and the NFL to hit the panic button?

Last week’s Sunday Night Football matchup drew in its lowest ratings in seven years (Monday Night Football didn’t fare any better) and last night’s game between the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings fell even further. According to Deadline, the primetime portion of last night’s game scored a 13.7/22 in Nielsen’s metered market ratings as the Vikings went on to beat the Packers 17-14. Not only is that down 18% from last year’s ratings, it’s also a 9% dip compared to the SNF opener just last week.

So what’s causing the sharp drop in interest? Clearly, many people have gotten turned off by the political protests during the national anthem, but The Guardian’s DJ Gallo argues that the play hasn’t been compelling enough to keep viewers watching:

The NFL has been a great escape for its fans from the larger problems of the world. The less of an escape the NFL provides, the more its fans will eventually find their own escape. Is that what we’re seeing now? It’s still too early to tell, but with the other issues hanging over the league, they may not want to wait for long to find out.

They can’t blame me for this drop in NFL viewers, as I haven’t watched an NFL football game since they fired Tom Landry.

I don’t want to oppress them by watching.
Let them get real jobs.

A good control/comparison would be college football ratings. If college football isn’t declining, it’s obvious that the NFL have only themselves to blame.

Lower ratings means networks get less advertising dollars.
I am unsure if this means the NFL teams get less money in their
current contract with the NFL or if their contract is guaranteed.

However, if it is guaranteed, the next contract will not be so pretty.
Either way, short term or long term, this nonsense will be costing
the NFL and teams a lot of money if this lower ratings trend continues.

I haven't tuned in nor do I plan to.

I do plan to write letters to sponsors and owners of the various teams.

For the first time in my life I find myself turning away from NFL. I find Golf to be much more of a man’s sport. A man is a gentleman. A man is a good role model. A man is independent. A man speaks clearly and concisely in proper English. A man doesn’t blame others for his shortcomings. A man is meek in his journey towards Godliness.

The more political correctness that creeps into an institution the more I seek relief from it. NFL has crossed the line and left me.

The NFL has decided to let their entertainment venue join all the rest of the programming on the MSM that’s anti-American and anti middle class.

It stopped being about the game. It is all politics and a bunch of weenie little thugs acting out. Most of them are paid way to much and want to be treated like primadonnas.

The people broadcasting all suck as much as most of the players.

Folks have better things to do than watch and listen to that crap.

I did some very quick, light research and it looks like college football ratings are unaffected, that means to me that Lthe NFL’s getting hurt by the players protesting the national anthem in the country itself.

Since Roger Goodell has stated the league’s support of a player’s right to protest the American Flag and national anthem, someone needs to ask him if it would be OK for players to protest against the NFL itself, perhaps by crossing out the NFL logo on their helmets, or simply by speaking out against the league in general. THAT question would instantly reveal his rank hypocrisy, and his willingness to place respect for a silly sports league above respect for the greatest nation on Earth.
