From the video I saw, the guy appeared to be standing and reaching into the vehicle.... there was chopper video that seemed to show that was the circumstance.

You are correct. The helicopter cam shows him reaching into the car.

You can see the problem with that in the image below from the chopper video. The window is closed and you see the trail of blood running down it.
