I always heard that Elizabeth was the arm pit of New Jersey.
When I was a kid in Brooklyn (late 50s/early 60s), we used to drive to Neptune City, New Jersey to visit my Mom's sister's family. We'd cross into Jersey and my sister and I would tell each other "Hold your nose! We're in Elizabeth!"
