WASHINGTON Residue from an explosive compound found at the scene of an explosion in a New York City neighborhood is unregulated and routinely used for target practice with exploding targets.

The compound, known by the brand name Tannerite, is sold in sporting goods stores. It is not regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives because it is sold as a mix of two chemicals that when kept separate are inert.

Some of us saw this one coming back in March of this year. #45 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3414203/posts

Why do I have the uneasy feeling that Muslims in this country are stockpiling large amounts of this Tannerite and we’ll be reading about it someday?

Sporting goods store = gun nut central (/sarc)

What a convenient way to blame right-wingers instead of Muslims.

Just read that Tannerite is not a huge seller. Looks like it can be tracked. Sporting stores....pay attention.

We can’t keep WAITING on them.

Half of us here are sick as dogs because we have family working in manhattan. It’s always gonna be a packed city.

I gotta get a job in NYC again instead of staten Island so i can be there if anything happens.

Everybody’s gotta keep their radar on high. Everywhere.

“I’m sure that it’s tracked.”

It is sold many retail places for cash. How do you track that?

Isn’t that the stuff that moron packed into an old lawn mower last year? Plugged the lawn mower with his rifle from about 50 feet away, went boom, and the mower blade came back at him and took off his leg.

Yes and easier to appear to do something like banning tannerite instead of banning muslims which would actually fix the problem.

The ATF looking for more things to ban even though it is relatively harmless.

It's a misnomer that paying cash saves you from government prying eyes. Every transaction in America is recorded via those black "bubble cameras" in the ceiling and facial recognition is used. As soon as the barcode for this Tannerite is scanned, you can bet that the transaction is being reviewed by law enforcement - whether you use cash or not. In fact, paying cash probably puts you under even more scrutiny.

We use it on the farm to blow up stumps and yes, it's easy to buy. It is used often in rural areas like mine for this purpose and we buy it from one of the local gun shops. We blew up a stump that was 500 feet from the house and pieces of stump landed on our roof. It is activated by shooting it with a rifle. It is relatively safe, compared to dynamite anyway, which is what rural farmers used in the past to blow up stumps. Here is a short YouTube video of our stump blowing up.

I might also mention, it’s relatively safe if you are smart enough to shoot it from a distance. :-)

Tannerite requires an projectile impact by an object traveling approx. 2000 ft/sec or faster to detonate.

Will it detonate when combined with another explosive? Don’t know.

Also, the reaction is endothermic.

I don’t know. I’ve never bought it because I figured it was tracked. If you can buy it for cash, then probably not.
