Marijuana Could Be the Answer to Curing Alzheimer's Disease, Study Shows
The Motley Fool ^ | September 18th, 2016 | Sean Williams

However, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies believe the cure to Alzheimer's disease might come from a readily available substance: marijuana.

In order to test their theory, researchers at the Salk Institute modified nerve cells to produce high levels of beta-amyloid. Researchers then noted that these higher levels of beta-amyloid production led to the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins and eventually nerve cell death. The ongoing death of these nerve cells is what leads to the progressive cognitive decline witnessed in Alzheimer's patients. This itself was an intriguing finding, as it was long believed that an immune-like response, not the proteins themselves, led to nerve cell death.

Now here's where things get interesting. As the researchers noted in their findings, nerve cells in the brain contain receptors that are activated by lipid molecules known as endocannabinoids, which are naturally produced by nerve cells. These endocannabinoids are believed to help nerve cells with their ability to send signals relating to appetite, pain sensation, and memory. Marijuana contains the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (more commonly known as THC), which is similar to endocannabinoids and can activate those same nerve cell receptors. In other words, the researchers at Salk Institute hypothesized that cannabis could block the receptors that lead to the release of pro-inflammatory proteins and prevent nerve cell death.

I enjoyed a few goofy laughs in my early teens. Maybe 4 or 5.

Then after 20, pot made my heart palpitate and become incredibly anxious.

Only me could that happen to :)

Taken too many prescription drugs. Got suckered.

As for illegal, besides half a dozen pot uses, I did ONE line of coke, my throat went numb, I panicked and never used again :)

Now alcohol..that’s a demon’s drink that I have enjoyed too many times

Could very well be.

I have a family member who is a heavy “self medicater”. He remembers EVERY past and present event, every article he ever read and every episode of The Simpsons...verbatim.

Oh geesh..yet another miracle cure for marijuana. Cures cancer. Cures Alzheimers. Cures darn near anything and yet those pharmaceutical companies just can’t seem to make any decent medicine from it.

Good Lord...marijuana cures EVERYTHING !!! /sarc.

It is still a FDA Schedule 1, newly re-affirmed as such. Has no medicinal value and is nothing more than a recreational drug.

They want to cure a memory destroying disease with a memory impairing drug? Seems counterintuitive.

I don’t care to partake of the evil weed but there’s no denying that it has great potential for diseases of the brain. There are over 30 receptors in the brain that can receive canabinoids, which means there are likely some tremendous benefits for certain debilitating conditions, aside from the known negatives and side effects.

For severe cases of autism an extract helps kids have fewer violent outbursts. And many Parkinson’s patients find benefit in reduced progression of the disease. If you’ve ever had a relative suffering from these type of conditions (I do) then something that shows benefit is not something you want to ignore.

Yeah, because when you have Alzheimer’s, you don’t know or care what’s going on. Dope surely will cure that. No doubt another useless study funded by tax drones for the care and feeding of useless researchers.

Gee, let’s let the Feds decide if its Free Men citizens, oops, I mean its Subjects, will be “allowed” to grow, harvest, eat, or sell a plant.

There’s no known cure for Alzheimers, but the Feds deny access to a possible cure....a plant.

The Tyrants sure know better than us what’s good for us./s

Oh, if only I could be like this, never having doubts about our “officials” and their motivations, taking whatever the bureaucracy says as Gospel, never finding my mind straying down dark alleys of suspicion.

Maybe when it’s time for me to have my Alzheimer’s, all these rogue brain cells in my head will die off and leave me basking in the sunshine of a spotless mind. I can only hope.

My point is that marijuana is claimed to cure anything and everything by those who are it’s proponents.

To reiterate my tagline..

The the marijuana aficionado’s everything must evidence that marijuana is more than just a recreational drug. It is the magic elixir that cures everything.

I remain unconvinced, and this alleged study is another in a long line of “studies” whose sole purpose is to justify the mainstreaming of pot smoking.
