In a year of record-setting heat on a blistered globe, with fast-warming oceans, fast-melting ice caps, and fast-rising sea levels, ratification of the December 2015 Paris climate summit agreementalready endorsed by most nationsshould be a complete no-brainer. That it isn't tells you a great deal about our world. Global geopolitics and the possible rightward lurch of many countries (including a potential deal-breaking election in the United States that could put a climate denier in the White House) spell bad news for the fate of the Earth. It's worth exploring how this might come to be.
Such nationalistic exceptionalism could become something of the norm if Donald Trump wins in November, or other nations join those already eager to put the needs of a fossil-fuel-based domestic growth agenda ahead of global climate commitments. With that in mind, consider the assessment of future energy trends that the Norwegian energy giant Statoil recently produced. In it is a chilling scenario focused on just this sort of dystopian future.
The second-biggest producer of natural gas in Europe after Russia's Gazprom, Statoil annually issues "Energy Perspectives," a report that explores possible future energy trends. Previous editions included scenarios labeled "reform" (predicated on coordinated but gradual international efforts to shift from carbon fuels to green energy technology) and "renewal" (positing a more rapid transition). The 2016 edition, however, added a grim new twist: "rivalry." It depicts a realistically downbeat future in which international strife and geopolitical competition discourage significant cooperation in the climate field.

Without the creativity and humor. Actually, without any redeeming characteristics at all.
On one point, he’s absolutely right — ratification of the climate change treaty is a no-brainer. If you have no functioning brain, you’ll be thrilled to ratify it.
The first sentence contains several outright lies. “Fast Warming Oceans?”, sorry no... their is no evidence that the rate of warming in the oceans has been increasing at all during the last 50 years.
“Fast Melting Ice Caps?”, no Antarctica has record amounts of ice and the temperatures have been lower than normal for years now. And ice levels in the arctic ocean are greater than last year despite the El Niño.
“Fast Rising Sea Levels?”... no again, the sea level has been rising at a constant and slow rate for hundreds of years. Anyone can confirm this by going to places near the sea that are hundreds of years old. In a few places the land is sinking or rising, but in most places the sea level has risen at most a foot or two in hundreds of years. As far as the first statement,
“Record Setting Heat on a Blistering Globe”, this last year was an El Niño year, before that average temperatures had not risen for approximately 20 years. But fear not even the El Niño fizzled fairly quickly and the likelihood of measurable cooling is currently much more of a threat to the planet because of a drop off in solar activity not seen in at least a century.
The problem here is that it takes several paragraphs to refute just the first sentence. Leftists spew such voluminous lies that no one has the time to completely refute them all.
” with fast-warming oceans, fast-melting ice caps, and fast-rising sea levels,”
Stop reading right there.
Amazing that those lies, unsupported by any science, are absolute “truth” to so many.
“fast warming oceans” NOPE.
Besides that fact that science tells us that “trapped heat” from Co2 (LWIR) does NOT heat water, prior to 2003 global ocean temperature was only an educated guess. In 2003 the ARGOS buoy system went online, it showed no warming for over 10 years so had to be “adjusted” by NOAA’s Karl in a 2015 paper which was so fraudulent he was subpoenaed to congress and then he resigned in disgrace.
All temperature graphs from NASA, NOAA and GISS STILL retain all his changes, oddly.
“fast-melting ice caps”
NOPE. While Arctic sea ice is melting, at the other pole, Zwally 2014 clearly shows in Antarctic that interior ice sheet gains EXCEED losses on the coast. Meanwhile Antarctic sea expands to record levels every year.
So, One Pole NOT MELTING, just the opposite.
Which ties in with : “fast-rising sea levels,”
NOPE. With Zwally’s new paper comes the inconvenient fact that snow falling in the interior of Antarctic reduces sea-levels, but surprise...all current sea-level calculations adjust for a LOSS of Antarctic land ice. Recalculations are in order which will show a much slower rising sea-levels or none at all. (sea level has been rising for 10,000 years)
So in the first sentence this article has its science ALL wrong. But I’m sure the authors believe themselves to be completely “on the side of science”.
The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot.... Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers, he declared, all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone... Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts, which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. - Washington Post 11/2/1922

Go, Trump! Drive a stake through this Marxist inspired crap!!
Thank you for the correction.
Sounds like Mother Jones has her panties in a wad ... calm down, you’ve got at least another 2 billion years or so before the Sun goes red giant and fries you like french fries.
Stop the PRESS!!!
When I was a child in government schools, it was a fact that we were going into a new ice age. So now that the sun is going into a solar minimum, we will see the new ice age (God willing, to freeze to death the northern crack pot lefties). Global warming died until they started calling it “climate change.” (Once BO was elected with the enduring WTF campaign, it became climate change.) My timelines might be screwed up a tad but WTF? So now that they have climate change, they are manipulating temperature numbers as bad as they are economic numbers (please see the 3 month revisions that the FED does on its numbers that never get press.) Please find one intelligent person over the age of 50 that thinks we are experiencing extremely hot temps, unless they put their thermometers in the big cities over black top... They probably are, as propaganda and government taxes are the only statist answer for our collective salvation from the government.
It’s never about making us lead lives of servitude and dependence, democrat party slaves?
the morons are ever so quick to want to blame the Americans
but do not look at the developing world which is spewing out multiples of what American does.
China? India? Brazil and the rest
. they just want to catch up.
not a one of them has any clean air or water rules
lol
AND they are dumping multiples of what Clean America does.

The only catastrophe will be Al Gore’s bank account.
We have very, very different concepts of "fast-rising." You have to go back about 100 years (yes, one hundred years, not a typo) to find about 1 cm (yes, again not a typo, one centimeter) of ocean rise.
Of course, back then we didn't have lasers and satellites and high precision measurements of the oceans' levels. Therefore you know that data from more than a couple of decades ago has been significantly "adjusted" - scaled and otherwise processed... IMHO the value of historical data in making such fine/precise measurements is highly suspect.
Thanks, I’ve been looking for that.
Do not think that any of these claims are valid. We do not have fast melting ice caps. We do not have fast rising sea levels. We do not have fast warming oceans.
Where are these claims coming from?
We do have record heat and record cold on different parts of the globe.
There is a difference between weather variations and climate change.
Mother Jones makes the NY Times look conservative...
