I remember the big silver one peso coins, resembling a silver dollar, back in the 60s. Now, found only in jewelry and coin shops... My father used to travel regularly to Japan during the 50's/60's/70's on business. He used to joke that when doing a currency exchange it would have been "easier to weigh it than count it".The Yen was all but worthless back then.Looks like the two currencies have been on different trajectories in recent years.

I was an Army Brat in Japan in the 50s. The exchange rate was 365 yen to the US dollar. Of course, no one was allowed to have “dollars.”
We had MPC, Military Payment Certificate instead. MPC or “script” was in $.05, $.10, $.25, $1, $5, $10 etc...
As a kid, I could have a wallet full of pink, gold, green and orange MPC, adding up to $3 or $4 bucks...

When we were transferred there (Misawa AFB) in mid 50s, it was 360 yen to the dollar
