Word quickly spread around the world this week that a sailor gave birth aboard an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, and for good reason.
Births aboard U.S. warships are rare. Births aboard a ship on a combat deployment are rarer still.
But theyre not unheard of. The Navy does not keep statistics on the number of children born aboard its ships, but archived media reports show this is not the first time a sailor has had a baby at sea or aboard a ship in a combat zone. In one instance, a child died a day after being born in secret and smuggled off the ship so nobody would know about it.

Tom Hanks is a more laid back type. It might be his comedy background showing through.
Gibson has the intensity needed to portray a good battle epic.
I would suggest using unknown actors like they did in Band of Brothers, that way they could be directed by him to give some unforgettable scenes.
Use good acting and direction, aided by select CGI, and a great movie could be made fairly cheaply.

In 2010 one of the workmen working on my basement sailed on the USS Leyte Gulf. He told me that I was the only one who knew the significance of Leyte Gulf. Sad, isn't it?
The battle scene in We Were Soldiers was intense and so damn moving.

Duffle Blog is like the Onion.
Satire.
Leyte Gulf was a great turning point in the war.
If the Japanese had been successful they could have damaged US morale and prolonged the war.
Leyte finished the Japanese navy.
It was a spent force that never mounted another serious threat.
The only other time the Yamoto (Yamato?) left port again was on a suicide run and it was sunk before it could do any damage.
Thanks to “modern” edumacational standards the bravery of previous generations will never be known.
All part of the plan to destroy the greatest nation on the earth.
“The battle scene in We Were Soldiers was intense and so damn moving.”
Yes it was.
I downloaded the song Sgt MacKenzie, the song used throughout the battle scene, and use it as a ringtone.
There’s a certain fatalism about it I find appealing.
I have the movie on DVD.
All this talk of things military is making me want to watch it again.
Guess I’ll have to open up my documentary cabinet and ‘re-fight a couple of wars.!
“The Johnston and Roberts names should never be retired from the navy. Sadly only one other ship was named Johnston and it was retired long ago.”
And Evans and Copeland deserve fighting ships with their names on them as well. Dunno if that fits the Navy’s protocol for naming ships but it ought to be done.
