We’re getting into the meat of Irving’s best songs. I found the Sinatra recording of “Reaching for the Moon” to be extremely haunting and one of the best I’ve heard.

BILLIE HOLIDAY: ”HOW DEEP IS THE OCEAN?“

This 1954 recording strips out the sentimentality and turns it into a jazz classic. The muted trumpet and piano solos are simply outstanding.

FRANK SINATRA: ”HOW DEEP IS THE OCEAN?“

This is the recording from the Sixties where Frank is backed by Nelson Riddle. It comes across as something of a torch song.

Good evening, Mayor, and thank you for today’s sustenance for body and soul.

Big plans for the weekend? Some rest? Dinging some dims?

KIRI TE KANAWA: ”HOW DEEP IS THE OCEAN?“

Nelson Riddle could write arrangements of the same song for Frank Sinatra, Linda Ronstadt and an opera singer like New Zealand’s Kiri Te Kanawa, and each one would sound different. Nelson understood how to underscore an individual voice. This recording from 1985 backs up a beautifully understated rendition that comes across like something between Puccini and Gershwin.
