NOGALES, Ariz. On an embankment that runs along a towering steel fence separating this border town from its Mexican sister city, a patch of new concrete with a date carved into it stands out, marking the exit of a tunnel Border Patrol agents sealed in May.
Dozens more like it snake around town, part of a vast underground network that Mexican drug cartels have used for years to funnel hundreds of pounds of illicit drugs into the United States. When Border Patrol agents find the tunnels, they dump concrete to seal them and stamp them with the date that they are shut down.
But they struggle to stay ahead of the digging. Last Friday, the Border Patrol, in a joint operation with Mexican authorities, discovered an unfinished tunnel that started in a Mexican cemetery.
The clock is ticking as soon as they complete a tunnel, said Kevin Hecht, a Border Patrol tunneling expert. They know that we will eventually find them. But if even one load gets through before we find it, they consider it a success.
While Donald J. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has made building a wall at the border a central element of his campaign, the fence here that reaches up to 30 feet has done little to deter enterprising drug smugglers. It has simply helped push them underground.
Border Patrol agents cannot hear smugglers digging and do not know how many tunnels there are, a gap in border security that homeland security experts say renders talk of a wall moot.
The Border Patrol has done an incredible job, given its resources, said Gen. Barry R. McCaffrey, the White House drug policy director in the Clinton administration. But it would be a stretch to say that the border and border communities are secure

Industrious little bastards these Mexicans. Imagine if they really gave a crap about their country how they could change it for the better.
“Uncommon Valor.” Starring Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze,Fred Ward. The character with the grenade was named Sailor. Good movie.
Re “funnel hundreds of pounds of illicit drugs” into the US over the years? This idiot writer than mentioned tons of drugs captured at just one tunnel site. Is this the “New Math” of the NY Times on the drug problems?
In the near future, I’m predicting that new technologies will be able to more accurately find even deeper drug tunnels from Mexico. You have to know something about geology, geography and electronic technological advancements to understand that this article is full of crap.
One thing we should do is to leave some little surprises in a few tunnels that we allow to operate (under observation). Our guys did it in Vietnam. Really hurts morale to know that you are going to be buried alive.
Never trusted Gen. McCaffrey to do the job right.
I would like to propose the following for discussion on morality.
Each year several hundred illegal aliens die in the deserts of Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. They die mostly of heat prostration or at the hands of coyotes.
If our border was not a fence but a barrier of land minds which is more moral? Only the mad walk across a mine field. A few would and a very few would die. Most people are not idiots. Lay down a mine field and post it with signs in many languages that say, “if your cross this mine field you will die.
Political correctness makes hundreds die every year. Mine fields will kill just a few. WHAT IS MORE MORAL?
There are still plenty of River Rats and Tunnel Rats who now how to cure that tunnel crap. Ugly way to die.
‘Non gratum anus rodentum’
I see the New York Times is trying to appeal to its core low-information (and common sense) liberal idiot voter with this tripe article.
1) Trump addressed this in his speech and expressed the need to build part of the wall underground.
2) See No. 1.
Who says the Mexicans have to come out before the tunnels get sealed?
Perhaps the Slimes Ron Nixon should have listened to Trump’s immigration speech...
” On day one, we will begin working on an impenetrable, physical, tall, power, beautiful southern border wall.
(APPLAUSE)
We will use the best technology, including above and below ground sensors thats the tunnels. Remember that, above and below.
(APPLAUSE)
Above and below ground sensors. Towers, aerial surveillance and manpower to supplement the wall, find and dislocate tunnels and keep out criminal cartels and Mexico you know that, will work with us. I really believe it. Mexico will work with us. I absolutely believe it. And especially after meeting with their wonderful, wonderful president today. I really believe they want to solve this problem along with us, and Im sure they will.”
Before the concrete, how about a few grenades?
What a f'n moron.
Organized, well paid criminals will always find a way around obstacles - the wall is to keep the riff raff from casually strolling across our border, dropping a kid and being given all manner of government handouts.
Trump’s words about the wall in his immigration speech:
“On day one, we will begin working on an impenetrable physical wall on the southern border. We will use the best technology, including above-and below-ground sensors, towers, aerial surveillance and manpower to supplement the wall, find and dislocate tunnels, and keep out the criminal cartels, and Mexico will pay for the wall.”
Aren’t they just so smug? Because, after all, the NYT knows EVERYTHING, don’t they??
Oh wow Mister enemy media thanks for telling Trump they will dig tunnels! He would never have thought of that without your help, thanks so much!
“Oh wow Mister enemy media thanks for telling Trump they will dig tunnels! He would never have thought of that without your help, thanks so much!”
LOL!
Uncommon Valor
MUST DEFEAT DE WALL!
MUST DEFEAT DE TRUMP!
MUST IGNORE DE LAW!
Hillary’s press corpse is desperate to publicize ANYTHING to defeat Trump.
But, according to their logic, because the wall cannot be a 100% success everywhere, it must not be built anywhere!
On the other hand, a 3 trillion dollar high-speed train that does not connect any city to any other city else built in the middle of nowhere towards the middle of nowhere else with no customers and saving no greenhouse gasses which won’t reduce global average temperatures at all for no reason all MUST BE BUILT because it “might” prevent a future potential climate change that will help grow more crops!
I ran across the Rodenator about 7 or 8 years ago. Tried to talk a friends son into buying a franchise. They are a legit business. We have lots of moles. And we like to see things blow up. Cue John Candy!
