Millions of young males have left the workforce and civic life. Full employment? The U.S. isnt even close.
Labor Day is an appropriate moment to reflect on a quiet catastrophe: the collapse, over two generations, of work for American men. During the past half-century, work rates for U.S. males spiraled relentlessly downward. America is now home to a vast army of jobless men who are no longer even looking for workroughly seven million of them age 25 to 54, the traditional prime of working life.
This is arguably a crisis, but it is hardly ever discussed in the public square. Received wisdom holds that the U.S. is at or near full employment. Most readers have probably heard this, perhaps from the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve, who said in a speech last week that it is a remarkable, and perhaps underappreciated, achievement that the economy has returned to near-full employment in a relatively short time after the Great Recession.
Near-full employment? In 2015 the work rate (the ratio of employment to population) for American males age 25 to 54 was 84.4%. Thats slightly lower than it had been in 1940, 86.4%, at the tail end of the Great Depression. Benchmarked against 1965, when American men were at genuine full employment, the male jobs deficit in 2015 would be nearly 10 million, even after taking into account an older population and more adults in college.

Coincidentally, about the same number of male illegal aliens are here.
Nowadays they vote for a living.
I suspect they are not really doing nothing. There are many ways to make money without appearing on the official payroll. Some of these are even legal!
I’d like to know the number of male college graduates who aren’t working fulltime or who are unemployed. These articles also leave out workers are are contractors and not fulltime hired employees.
Yesterday a lady called in on Rush with a suggestion
Place a bounty on border crossing illegals and set the unemployed men up as bounty hunters in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas
I’ve been posting that idea here for a long time, along with a bounty for identifying employers of illegals. There are many possibilities for solving our trespasser problem.
It’s interesting that for all of the statistics in the article, there is no mention of the increased participation of women in the outside of the home workforce since ww2. In any event, loafers are made possible by the dependency culture fostered by the welfare state.
Look at couples in public that are below 30 years old. How often is it you see that the woman is driving? There is a war on men and it is turning men into women.
TV sitcoms portray men as idiots or buffoons. So do commercials.
“Id like to know the number of male college graduates who arent working fulltime or who are unemployed”
Yeah, F those welders, sheet metal men, electricians, machinists, assembly line workers, and an array of technicians etc. Only college grads matter.
Another consequence of our totally unbacked currency and the Federal Reserve - which is the foundation of massive, progressive-left government, massive debt and the nanny state.
Honest question - I’m young enough, able-bodied, have an undergrad in history, a JD and an MBA but I’m stuck in retail atm...do I count towards the 7 million? I know the govt couldn’t care less.
This is the same Wall Street Journal that loves open borders. The open borders that are killing male employment. But do the “journalists” ever put 2 and 2 together? Of course not.
Don’t forget the enemy islamist pig-dog in the White House.
That’s not what I’m saying. I’m comparing male college graduates vs female college graduates.
I generally hate any and all government programs. However, the Civilian Conservation Corps is one of the few that I love. What a great idea. Take millions of unemployed men and put them to work.
The legacy they left is being used and enjoyed today by all Americans. Trails, roads, parks, paths and tons of huge infrastructure was built by the CCC.
While our problem today is not on the same scale, a modern CCC would be great, especially for underserved communities. Young black men have a tremendously high unemployment rate coupled with a generational legacy of not working. A strong CCC would instill a work ethic in many of these young men and teach them the value of a hard days work and a paycheck, not an EBT card.
Here’s your choice. Join CCC or get your payments cut off. Commit to one or two year enlistments. We will provide lodging, food and work clothes and a paycheck. You will learn a skill, in many cases one that can be used for a full time career when your enlistment is over.
No
I think that was his point.....a welder or an electrician is eminently more employable than someone with a liberal arts Bachelors Degree.
Your background sounds a bit like mine.
I got the heck out of retail the day I realized that
the birth of my next child would qualify me for
food stamps. Despite working 60+ hours per week.
In December 2014 there were 18 million immigrants (legal and illegal) living in the country who had arrived since January 2000. But job growth over this period was just 9.3 million half of new immigration. For Every New Job, Two New Immigrants.
