Chargers to Greet Colin Kaepernick with a ‘Salute to the Military’ on Thursday Night

Colin Kaepernick’s first time on the field since sitting for the national anthem comes in the NFL’s #1 military town on a night dubbed a “Salute to the Military.”

The optics promise a startling contrast if nothing else. As one African American in red, white, and gold sits during the song another, Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Powell, in dress whites sings it. A color guard representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines and 240 soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines holding a massive “super flag” on the field aid the visual aspect of the performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” at Quaalcom Stadium in San Diego.

So-called super flags generally take up the entirety of a football field. Their 300-feet-by-150-feet dimensions almost perfectly correspond to the size and shape of the gridiron. They weigh more than a half ton and cost north of $50,000.

The San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Kaepernick, who finds himself behind Blaine Gabbert on the depth chart, likely plays in the game as teams generally rest starters in the final preseason exhibitions.

They should have a Marine Color Guard stationed behind him on the bench at all times.

Perhaps... we will find out what the members of the 49ers O-line thinks about his stand...

Perhaps they will sit out a play...

If I’m interested at all, it is only to see which Charger makes the hit.

What’s a Blaine Gabbert? lol, colin sucks!!!

Money TALKS folks. I got an offer from Target to just COME IN to the store and spend 10 dollars, their treat. I LOVE IT! And yes, I told them to go to hell.

Their company is going down the toilet because of the toilets :)

I called and tweeted EVERYBODY after colin’s escapades.

The niners, the jets (my team), the players league, colin’s twitter page, and others and made it VERY clear not a dime will be spent by my friends and I, INCLUDING watching the games, if this isn’t rectified.

I vaguely remember a defensive line which actually did that and let the QB get sacked really badly.

Can’t pin it down in my memory or on Google.

Amazing this gets more press than the fact that the DNC refused to put the flag on stage and later on honored the mother of a thug who robbed a store and then tried to kill a cop.

Whoever is blocking Kaepernick blind side should let the Charger have a open shot on Kaepernick.

Someone should check the football for a fuse before he uses it.

Don’t give him a chance to shout Allahu Akbar.

Where's a young Rodney Harrison when he could do something useful?

What you said ... would LOVE to see ALL of the above and more! Hoping for long, loud, and hearty booing from the crowd when kapernick takes to the field. SD is the perfect town for that, too.

For sure, it provides some interest in a nothingburger game.

I think ESPN's Adam Schefter gave us a "heads up" about this when he posted on both Twitter and Facebook last weekend that the last 49ers preseason game was in San Diego--a town with a HUGE military presence (huge US Navy base, Miramar Marine Corps Air Station and Camp Pendleton).

Military salute nights have not been free in the past. Apparently the non-profit NFL has paid the money back due to public disclosure of the practice. Rally on. The military paid pro sports teams $10.4 million for patriotic displays, troop tributes By Dave Hogg  @Stareagle on Nov 4, 2015, 4:11p The McCain/Flake report finds $53 million in Department of Defense spending for patriotic displays at sporting events. Teams in the five major American sports leagues have taken in more than $10 million in marketing deals with the military since 2012, but the Department of Defense (DOD) can't account for all of the contracts, much less the money. The fact that teams like the New York Jets had taken military money to honor hometown troops was revealed this spring, but a report released Wednesday shows that the spending was much larger and much more widespread than originally believed. In all, the DOD spent $10.4 million on marketing contracts with teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS. This does not count sponsorships in NASCAR, which could total as much as $100 million.

Sept 3 is also the beginning of Fleet Week in San Diego - so celebrations galore and everyone dressed and “lookin’ pretty”.
Actually it sounds like Fleet Month as it goes on until October.

I can think of a few old time NFL men who would like to invite Colinoscopy out behind the bleachers for some training in what it means to be an American.

Every minute he is on the field.

Back when it was real football! They may be bigger, faster, better, stronger and more movie-star ready now, but give me Jack Lambert-types from my era anytime.

And get off my lawn!
