I’ve seen and been to a few. The ‘guest of honor’ is roasted and tries to give as good as he gets.
How many roasts have you been to, as I alluded to above, where the object and all the guests concentrated their spleen on one attendee?
Like I said, I’ve never seen it.

The old roasts -- I think Dean Martin had to do with a lot of them -- focused on the guest of honor.

Comedy Central's roasts do spill over into abuse of the attendees and celebrity roaster.

For one thing, they go on longer and the time has to be filled up somehow.

Somebody who's an easy punchline can expect a certain amount of flak from his or her peers.

Add politics and it could get a lot more abusive.

Then again, even in the old days, you could count on an awful lot of jokes about Dean’s drinking, whoever the “guest of honor” was supposed to be. It wasn’t as raunchy as the Comedy Central roasts are, though.
