It’s about what you can control and what you can’t control. You can control the uniforms and keep them from putting anything on them that draws the league into controversy. You can’t control their minds and how they want to handle various parts of the pre-game. They could make him stand, but there’s so many other ways to protest even while standing (no hand on the heart, look away, spit) they just can’t force that issue. The best they could pull is to force him to act respectful then in the post game interview he’ll talk about how the league forced him. So they’re going to let him be dumb, knowing he isn’t actually any good and he’ll probably be out of the league soon.

One of the real problems with sports is that they think they should have a say in politics. To order players to make a statement favoring a political stand is no different than unions using dues to fund candidates. Not all players believe in what the Dallas owners politics are and that’s truly their rights. So they have just as much right to remain silent or openly oppose the ownership in their views. So the ownership shouldn’t display their views at the players expense.
Contrary to popular belief, Arlington actually owns AT&T Stadium. The Dallas Cowboys owner pays rent, $2 million a year since 2009, which is when the stadium opened. And he will as long as the team plays there. But if the owners, the city of Arlington, would like to build a wall or a statue to commemorate fallen police or soldiers, that is their right.
