Homeless advocates and public health officials are squaring off over a controversial Obama administration proposal to ban smoking in government-assisted housing projects.
The smoking ban has drawn praise from health officials who say it would spare non-smokers from the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke. But homeless advocates are enraged by the proposal, which they fear could force low-income residents who cant kick the habit out of their homes.

“So, after how many years did the tobacco bad thing start?”
Since I can’t remember seeing it in 19th century sources, let me just say that they were called “gaspers” and “coffin nails” early in the 20th century.
One parent died of COPD, the other high blood pressure and stroke. It doesn't take much 2 nd hand smoke to choke me up. I'm not talking lung cancer here just the Inability to draw a full breath.
It is very unfortunate that you suffer from asthma; my commiserations. I have it too.
What makes a tobacco Nazi, though, is the willingness to torment one’s fellow man because of one’s personal wants or needs.
So it is wrong for me to expect someone to give up something , in my company, that they do for pleasure because he keeps me from breathing? Interesting.
There ya go. Some cigarettes cost more- thousands BURNT UP. Would they roll up a $5 and light it? Smoke doesn’t belong in your lungs- ANY smoke. It’s BAD. Weed also affects your brain in way tobacco does not. Double threat. I’m for requiring ALL amokers to wear headgear that keeps ALL their delicious smoke to themselves. Bubbles, helmets, plastic bags- whatever- for full enjoyment and the protection of others. The question still is- if smoking is prohibited in government housing is that ALL smoking, or just tobacco? And how do you say the guy smoking a cigarette has to stop but the guy smoking a joint doesn’t??

“So it is wrong for me to expect someone to give up something, in my company, that they do for pleasure because he keeps me from breathing? Interesting.”
Great googly moogly, why are people on the wrong side of an issue always unable even to understand the arguments of their opponents? Well, I guess that question kind of answers itself.
Anyway, no, I do not think you have an absolute right to demand it. What are the circumstances? Are we in your home? At an outdoor rock concert? Is it more appropriate that the other person should refrain, or that you should leave?
I think your phrase, “in my company,” is just a tiny bit misleading. Not on your part, possibly, but with regard to the tobacco Nazis. They don’t want to stop smoking just in their company, but completely, at all times and places.
I prefer a more voluntary approach, one suitable for the extended order of human cooperation. I often think of the movie “Stagecoach” in this context.
Hatfield tells the doctor, “Put out that cigar! Youre annoying this lady.”
The doctor, perceiving himself to be in the wrong, says, “Excuse me, madam. Being so partial to the weed myself, I sometimes forget that it disagrees with others.”
“@ an average cost of $5.51 per pack, “
How about an average of $10.00 a pack here in MA.

“Having grown up an asthmatic child in a house with 2 heavy smokers,”
I was an asthmatic child growing up in a smoke free home.
Apparently smoking is not the only reason people get asthma.
.
Of course tobacco smoke is not the only things that causes asthma and allergies. My brother and I can both attest to that.
Trump will be fumigating the WH at the same time the directive kicks in.
